Big 12 Interviewing 17 team; May not add any

Whenever the Big 12 makes a decision on expansion, the league certainly will have done its due diligence.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby will conduct video conferences with 17 schools that have contacted the league about being considered as expansion candidates, sources told ESPN.

Sources also said it's "becoming less and less likely" that the league will expand to 14 teams. The most likely scenario is that the Big 12 will stay at 10 teams or only add two schools for a 12-team league with two six-team divisions, sources said.

Just read this story on dallasnews.com.  Of the 17 mentioned, 15 are listed by name.  Among them, SMU, New Mexico, Tulane and Northern Illinois. North Texas sure as hell better be one of the two not specifically listed.  Not that we have a solid chance for consideration, but we should at least take advantage of the (seemingly) "open-door" opportunity to tell our story and initiate conversation for the future.

Unless Smatstek or Wren Baker did it then we aren't one of them. RV said he, "didn't want to get laughed at." As if he wasn't already.

And it was under RV's watch that we are still getting laughed at and not even being close to consideration for the B12.  Fifteen friggin' years wasted!

This is good news for us.  If Houston is added to the Big 12, it give that conference's schools yet another every other year trip into Texas...and, yet another reason for them to not "need" to schedule an OOC game with us for Texas recruiting exposure as a result.

You may argue the other way, "But, if Houston moves up, maybe we move up to the AAC."  That's a big if at this point. 

We already know that Big 12 schools come into Texas regularly without having to schedule us.  We have no idea if we'd be a leading candidate to join the AAC if Houston pays OU and Texas to join the Big 12 and be pimped by them for several years before they both abandon the conference.

Take a closer look as to what this is really saying. If any of those programs listed, are worthy of consideration for membership in the Big 12, a P5 conference, then all of those programs as well as many of the remaining members of the G5 conferences are also worthy of being included in competing for a National Title. At the very, very least there should be THREE additional conferences made up of current G5 members and based on certain criteria such as, enrollment, history of program, market size, facilities, etc. If these additional THREE conferences were made up of between 12 and 14 members then that would mean anywhere from 36 to 42 schools should be included in the right to compete for a national title. And yes, despite the terrible performance of our programs under RV, I do believe North Texas should be included in one of those three conferences.

None of them are worthy of the Big 12.  Oklahoma and Texas are just trying to figure out if any pair of them can make them some more money before they split at the end of the current television deal.

If UH gets moved up to the Big XII--terrible move by the Big XII--Rice will be your AAC replacement, in a heartbeat. They replace Houston, plus they have the backing of their fellow privates in SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa.
