It was an 'anchor' store you would see at malls, similar to Sears/Dillards/JCPenney.

My grandmother used to drag me into that place where I'd have to follow her through flowery grandma perfume, gaudy grandma jewelry, and giant grandma bra sections.  Nearly passed out from the sensory overload when it was all said and done, she'd take me down the highway to Pardee's Toys and let me pick out anything I wanted for not making her life miserable in the department store.  It was a win/win/I nearly died from perfume every trip!

Ahhh...memories! My folks called it "Monkey Ward's". As in "I need a wrench. Goin' to Monkey Ward's and be back in an hour!".
