It was announced that UNT is buying out the last 2 years. How much of those 2 years is the only question. See the 3rd paragraph below:

Villarreal has just less than two years remaining on his contract, which is set to expire on Feb. 28, 2018, and will receive a buyout.

Then this is not really a retirement.  It is a firing in my book.

It's not a retirement or resignation at all. He was cut and dry fired. I think they are letting him keep a little bit of his dignity by calling it a mutual resignation, but if he's getting paid to walk away it was  because he was involuntarily terminated. By calling it what it actually is rather than sprucing it up actually gives UNT more credibility. It shows that athletics at UNT are finally being taken serious and standards are in the process of being set.

I hope they are not "letting" him do anything. I hope the right to claim resignation was negotiated and cost Rick Villarreal a nice chunk of change., That is what a real FBS playing university would do.

This is absolutely a firing. Make no mistake about it. RV wasn't walking away from the easiest job in America.

Thumbs up, UNT.
