Will he whore himself like he does UNT athletes? That is the question.

Heard a report that Memphis and Houston are making a hard sell to the Big 12. Apparently Fed Ex or UPS (whichever is located in Memphis) has agreed to become a MAJOR sponsor of the Big 12 if and only if Memphis gets in.

Don't worry, folks, I'm sure RV has Metzlers and Anderson Floors putting similar pressure of the Big 12 on UNT's behalf.

They made the same pitch to the Big East when it was still an "AQ" conference and didn't work, also worth noting Memphis wasn't invited in round 1 of the latest with Houston, SMU and UCF.

FedEx could throw dump trucks of money into Memphis and make them irresistible but they've never done that (don't get me wrong they are a serious sponsor) but they are seriously into quid pro quo of getting something they can show the shareholders and being the super sugar daddy of Memphis Tigers athletics hasn't been it. FedEx also offered dump truck loads of money to the owner of the Grizzlies and NBA if the team name would be changed to Memphis Express and adopt FedEx colors. The NBA said no thank you.

Why would Big 12,MWC, or AAC have any interest in North Texas ? Even when Johnny had us in NCAA's and D.D. took us to 4 bowl games  we really didn't pack the fans in. The year Mac took us to a bowl game in our own backyard but our regular season attendance was nothing to brag about.Winning cures a lot of ills, but we really don't seem to have a big fan base even when we do win. Any ideas as to lack of support other that it's all R.V.'s fault?

One winning season in 10 years will still keep fans away.  The right hire is usually one way to put together a string of winning season.  We have had poor hires under RV that has caused this cluster.  Good coaching, winning seasons against good opponents will get the fans out.  Wins over Tx Southern, Idaho, etc., won't always do it.  And neither will epic losses to the likes of Portland State.

Basketball attendance was on the rise. We were able to get more than 7k for conference home games at the end of the JJ era.

To both of you:

Winning is probably always going to be the major factor driving attendance, but the piss poor service and game experience issues do not help. @oldguystudent is probably one of their more reliable customers and seems to have insulated himself with an appropriate amount of lowered expectations (not a shot at you-just my view) and he has repeatedly posted about the PITA of buying walk up basketball tickets. You've got to find ways to make people want to come and enjoy their time at the game.

He knows.   He was sitting on the floor at the time.   I know because I bummed his seats one time, and they were awesome.

People under value the importance of the Portland St loss. Many fans walked away after that game and won't be back until major changes occur. I think attendance numbers this year will be a huge shock to some.

One would hope they would be a big shock to President Smatresk and the BOR, but it's becoming more and more apparent they could care less. Sure, Smatresk says the right things, but what has he actually done? Kept the Hattiesburg Hustler around, kept a terrible basketball coach around, and called fans who want change "a minute few."

What he is going to see this year is the minute few will be those actually attending UNT football games because of his decisions. But if he were ever honest with you, he would tell you he just doesn't care.

That Portland State loss will sting for awhile. Homecoming is the one time (game) that gets some long lost folks to wander back to Denton for a weekend game. Its why the attendance for that game is usually better than the other spares on the schedule we play at home. There are a lot of people who will not attend another UNT football game for years after that embarrassment. You don't receive the worst loss in modern college football history and  not suffer even more repercussions--the attendance will be down this year, and last year saw us average 13k at the 30k seat Apogee Stadium. Littrell was a very solid hire, IMO, but he has zero name recognition to most fans, so its not like people will flock to Denton to see how he's gonna do here as a coach. I figure SMU will be a good crowd--because Dentonites turn out for former SWC teams--so I'd expect the crowd to be around 23k or so. But the other games probably won't touch 18k.

The big key for any changes to be made here regarding RV is actually pretty simple--it'll take the UNT 17 losing a few donors and blaming it on RV's incompetence. Otherwise, he's gonna be here for a while. The only way the BOR allows RV to leave is if he does something criminal (not in the eyes of the remaining fans, but to the police) and he is too smart for that to lose the easiest AD job (by miles) in America.

SMU attendance will be under 20k I bet.

If UNT loses to SMU, less than 15k show for Butt Cookman. If UNT loses to Butt Cookman (a real possibility), 13k will be wishful thinking...

Most impactful statement you've made lately.

And it echoes Tim MacMahon's public sentiments.

It's not that a minute few are angry, it's that there are a minute few followers of the program period. So that makes the angry fans an even smaller proportion.

It's a numbers game. And the numbers are small.

The alumni base is POTENTIAL, it is someones job to change potential into actual participants.

Before TCU went on this recovery to greatness, their attendance was horrible. Not much better than we do. Winning solves a lot of problems. Look at SMU basketball. The few students that went to the games were there to study since T was so quiet. They started winning and you can't get a tkt anymore. "Just Win Baby!!!

Can't win with a Hustler who only cares about self protection at the helm.

Poison.
