As talk of Big 12 expansion ramps up again, Marshall head coach Doc Holliday says the constant focus on ways to make the most money is bad for college sports and will create more problems for too many programs.

Holliday spent more than two decades at West Virginia, and while WVU’s jump to the Big 12 from the Big East was important, there have been drawbacks for fans with how far road games are. Teams’ travel costs have also gone up.

What’s happened a lot in the Power 5, you have to be careful with your fanbase,” he told SiriusXM College Sports Nation. “There are a lot of conferences out there that aren’t good fits for certain schools, because their fans can’t (travel). One thing Conference USA has done for Marshall is bring the conference back to us, within driving distance.”

Some of the names coming up for possible Big 12 expansion include UConn, BYU, Cincinnati and others outside the footprint. But with the money that comes from being a Power 5 school, those schools want to get in.

At this point in the game, it makes sense to want to be Power 5, given the growing divide, but the college sports map has completely shifted in the past decade, and Holliday says if schools only keep looking for the ways to make more money, it’s going to just create a bigger divide and cause more problems — even within the conferences.

“I don’t know what the solution is,” he said. “Our problem right now is it’s all about greed and money. That’s where it is. If there’s more money to be made out there, I don’t think people are too concerned about how it affects each other, unfortunately. I’ve only had three jobs in the Power 5, and they were all tremendous schools.
