A blogger who is a regular poster on the FCS forum board Any Given Saturday looked into the NCAA rule book and found that the WAC, even though they dropped football, they are still an active athletic conference, previously had been a D-1A/FBS conference and have retained the right to invite schools to play at the FBS level (current FBS teams and FCS move ups).

Like A Zombie, The WAC Could Indeed Rise from the Dead

He also wrote an excellent article Idaho's Return To Big Sky Shows How Broken FBS Membership Is, which looks at how in his opinion FBS membership isn't as great as some think it is.

That guy suggests UTRGV as a possibility for both starting a program and moving to the FBS level. Yes, they are "studying" the idea. They are also a school that was actually kicked out of the Sun Belt for poor support of athletics.

I don't see how Big 12 adding 2 programs effects North Texas. Our best fit is still either CUSA or The Belt. MWC is in wrong time zone with too much travel expense. With the significant reduction in our T.V. revenue ,the reason for far flung conferences like CUSA no longer make economic sense. For the "other five" conferences such as ours, regional affiliations like the MAC would probably work better as we could build more natural rivals and reduce expenses. If there is less money coming in, then you must have less going out. In my opinion we need to have CUSA and The Belt join forces and geographically divide their combined Universities into East and West. One group could be CUSA, the other The Sun Belt. The T.V. revenue for the "other five " conferences is going, going, gone.
