Look back: North Texas leaders fired Dan McCarney after the Mean Green suffered an embarrassing 66-7 homecoming loss to Portland State, an FCS opponent who pushed the UNT season record to 0-5.

McCarney, who spent three seasons as an assistant on Urban Meyer's Florida Gators staff before taking the North Texas job, went 22-32 leading the Mean Green. The highlight of his tenure was the 2013 season when North Texas went 9-4 and won the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The school ultimately hired North Carolina assistant coach Seth Littrell to revamp UNT.

Top returnees: RB Jeffrey Wilson, WR Turner Smiley, DB Kishawn McClain, DB James Gray

Strengths: North Texas hired Littrell, a well-liked young assistant, with the hope he could bring a dose of the explosive offense he helped run at North Carolina. The Mean Green return their top two rushing threats from last season, Jeffrey Wilson and Willy Ivery. On the other side of the ball, junior safety Kishawn McClain led the team with 110 tackles, including 77 solo stops.

Alabama third-string quarterback Alec Morris transferred to the program in the spring and is immediately eligible to play. Kansas State defensive tackle Bryce English also transferred to North Texas, where his father played and his sister currently is a student, but it's unclear whether the NCAA will allow him to play during the 2016 season.

Looking at only one win makes me angry because we should have easily beaten UTEP but they played everyone. So ridiculous. I know it's only one game but it irritates me.

We've been trying to tell everyone that this year isn't going to be about wins on the field. We can very easily go 1-11 again, probably will be within a game of that on either side, especially if we cannot beat Butt Cookman at home, which will be the only team we face this year as a favorite.

2016 is all about wins off the field--winning over FBS recruits that are actually being recruited by other FBS schools, winning over the roster in the locker room to keep working to get stronger and more comfortable with the system that Littrell has put in place, and by winning over Texas HS coaches to actually consider recommending UNT as a place that would be a good home for their players as anything but a safety net school.

If we go 1-11, but our recruiting is ranked above 90th overall, by next February, then 2016 will have been a huge success. We need a culture change within our locker room and we need a huge upgrade in talent coming into the program. If we don't get the last part, even a culture change within the team won't be enough to make Littrell turn this into a winner anytime soon.

Basically, we are exactly in the same spot that SMU was a year ago, when they beat us and Tulane, but also lost to an FCS team at home that was better than we were in James Madison. Only once, against Tulsa, did SMU lose by less than 10 points. Every other loss was between 19 and 63 points. But their recruiting has jumped up and they have changed the culture over there to actually believe they will be good soon. Morris came from Clemson as an offensive minded coach, just like Littrell has from UNC. And if Morris can turn things around at SMU and get them to a bowl game in the next year or two, after taking over the absolute worst FBS program in the country, he will be headed to greener pastures somewhere in the P5 world. Sound familiar?

This is correct. That's why I think this team IS SMU 2015. 

Only problem is this team doesn't have a 2015 UNT or 2014 SMU anywhere on the schedule...
