can someone refresh my memory on why the team didn't get bowl rings from the HOD bowl?  some of the guys, mainly zach orr has been asking about that on twitter.  i know the players got a ring from the new orleans bowl, because one of the players wore it to class.  just curious.

I thought the team decided on watches instead?

So I'm going by memory here, and my memory isn't what it once was (I think.  I can't remember), but I seem to recall that the HOD didn't offer rings.  It was take a watch or GTFO.

Do you always get rings for Bowl appearances?  Or is it just Conference Championships?

good point.  it could of been a conference championship ring he was wearing.

The bowl itself chooses the gifts for the bowl winners

the part of the team that has commented on this seem to think different.  orr, akunne and pleasant

I was told it was voted on by the players, by a player.  A parent of a player also came on here and said the same.  You had the option for the watch or rings.  That is what I was told.  It may not be true or maybe that's what they told the players to shut them up.

This is petty. Rings are for conference and/or national champions. Not bowls.

Exactly!!  When their athletic exploits can get on your level then they can whine, am I right???  He doesn't know how true winners roll!!!!

Jeez, the audacity of kids these days.

We got rings for our 2002 New Orleans Bowl win. And i believe also conference championship rings for 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Can't find the photos on Rick Yeatts' web site right now but he and I photographed them along with the NOB trophy. Which is heavy. Heavier than the Heart of Dallas Bowl trophy. I've held both.

Memphis got rings from their 2007 NOB win, a sure weren't conference champs.

Somebody needs to tell these folks they aren't supposed to get rings for winning bowls they got invited to without winning conference championships:

Also unrelated but interesting, here's a 2007 Sun Belt basketball champ ring

stop whining... you got a watch.  Do you really want people to ask you about the time you beat UNLV in a bowl where they brought 500 people and shouldn't have been in that bowl in the first place?

Zach and others conveniently left that out before they started bitching and moaning

Why so ugly about it?  It's been a while and they apparently forgot.  It happens.

Team voted for watches.

Source confirmed that they voted for watches because if they got rings the cost would have eaten up funds for all the other "gifts" they received from the bowl. A couple of parents tried to organize an effort to buy rings after the win but were informed that it would be some sort of rules violation.
