Good stuff.  Very informative.

I also checked out the periscope videos and noticed a lot of things.  Looks like the 10 yard cushion for dbs is a thing of the past.  I'm consistently seeing 5 yards or less.

Also saw them working on pass rush and heard the coach specifically talking about blitzing.

Now we get to see if this team has "talent" or not.  I think the defense is going to be a pleasant surprise.  with blitzing and tight man coverage, I still expect them to give up big plays, but with more aggression, I expect them to make more big, game changing plays too.

We played a safe, bend don't break defense over the last 4 years, and still wound up giving up big plays anyway.

So Vito has gone from poking fun at Shanbour (or more accurately the fans who thought he was better than the last staff thought he was) to saying he's looking like the #2 guy...

I think it's more of an incrimination of the depth rather than an endorsement of Shanbour as #2. "...Shanbour looks tiny out there..."

With the safeties playing up they will be more responsible for outside containment on run plays. This should allow the DE to shoot straight for the backfield. On our D line our DE do have good size.

Eh, I seem to recall Vito talking about how/why there's a reason he's behind all of the scholarship QBs. He was being fed that line from the last staff. The same staff that can't identify or develop talented QBs...

Yup he's leapfrogged the scholarship QBs

This. There is no depth at QB.

But is that saying much?

It does for Quinn, but it doesn't for Chico and Mac...if Shanbour can throw a ball downfield more than three yards away from the LOS to one of actual receivers, he's already better than almost anyone we have had in the last few seasons.

If Morris gets hurt, its a very real probability we don't win more than a game all season long.

I don't think I, or Vito are getting through here...

Aside from Morris, who is still unproven as well,  the QB situation sucks.  Does it matter who is ahead for the #2 spot behind Morris between Shanbour, Means, Chumley or anyone else?   They're all on the same level, and that level is not very good.
I'm almost willing to bet that Fine will get here in the fall and see the field before Shanbour does if something happens to Morris.

As far as being the #2 on the UNT depth chart at QB for the 2016 season, they're battling to be king of the turds... not a nice backup to the starter.   Does this make sense?

I really hope Chumley moves to receiver soon so he can help the team, and Means just graduates so we can have the scholarship he's using back.

I understand what you're saying about the quality of our scholarship backups - and I agree that it doesn't take much talent to pass them by - but as a walk-on to be getting second team reps at D1 level is still something he can be proud of.

I approve this message.

I really hope we don't have to rush Fine to the field. We all need to remember he is a single offer kid who needs a year to put on weight and adjust to a game where 300lb linemen are quicker than most of the safeties he played against in high school.

Pray Morris actually has something and can stay upright, otherwise 3 wins might turn into one... Or none...

You know, it seems to me that the current coaching staff may agree with all of you regarding the QB situation as it looked when they arrived. They then took action to correct the situation as best they could. As a result, the two most game experienced QB's are no longer on the team. And the remaining candidates, in their opinion, have the best potential. I'm a little disappointed that BV limited his assessment of Shanbour to his physical stature. If Morris purely throws the ball better than Shanbour, then that's cause for real excitement. Because of the QB candidates last year, and based on throwing drills only, (IMHO) Shanbour had the best, and most accurate arm of all of them.

I'll try and get out there tomorrow and see how they all look to me.

Wouldn't it be funny if Shanbour win the starting job and threw for 2,800 yards, 25 TDs and 8 INTs and rushed for another 400 plus.

Every post for a year from you would be "Brett Vito, I told your dumb ass," and deservedly so. ?

Only couch opinion from Periscope'd drills I've watched, but even through all the fuzziness, Morris looked like the best guy out there. Demeanor, delivery. Last year, Dajon and McNulty couldn't separate themselves from one another. I am going to try to make it Saturday.

Thanks silver.  I look forward to what your assessment.

There's too many opinions on here based on what happened at UNT years ago, or what happened with the last coaching staff.  Lots of opinions based on irrelevant things instead of actually watching the player.

There's no guarantee we will be good, but if you are going to come on here and predict failure, can it be based on something physical and football related.  A physical flaw that will prevent this player from being able to perform.

Just because you have never seen a player play does not mean he cannot play.  Several on here says we have no talent for next year.  How do you know? Have you been to practices?  Have you seen footage?  What is this based on?  Cause they didn't play for Mac and Chico?  Cause they didn't perform well in a lame defense?

I haven't seen a lot of these guys, but from what I have seen from goree, wilson, and ivery, they definetly have talent.  I think some on here mean to say they lack EXPERIENCE.

I'm not going to do the opposite and assume these guys will be good either.  This is a totally new situation, and it's a wait and see approach for me.  This coaching staff is doing things almost the exact opposite of Mac and Co, so basing anything on what they did is not relevant in a lot of cases.

I'm by no stretch saying that Chico or McCarney were ace talent evaluators... but they are in the business.  They saw these guys up close and decided to roll with McNulty, Smith and Greer... even after seeing them play too.

Maybe Shanbour fits well in a spread/air-raid offense.  I guess we'll see.... but I hope we don't, because that would mean Morris was injured.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't coach Littrell tell Vito in a past interview that he was impressed with Shanbour? For an incoming coach to say that about a kid, who is a walk-on, tells me that they see something that Vito obviously does not see or care to see. The guys are still in shorts. It is way too early to anoint anyone as the savior or dismiss others as being worthless based on the few limited practices. Yet Vito seems to have his favorites (or least favorite in the case of Shanbour) which obscures any objective reporting. This is evident by his comment that if Morris goes down, the team is in a world of hurt. From what I have seen on Periscope, I like what I see in both Morris and Shanbour. I am curious to hear other's assessments who do not have an already set bias.

Let's be fair here. BV has a whole team to evaluate, not just the QB's. His focus on Tuesday was probably Morris, and when Shanbour got out there, he was looking more at how someone else was doing......such as the OL and the defense. Having said that, I'm still disappointed that the only comment about Shanbour was his physical stature. Which was the only thing he said about him last year when I had a "why don't they just give him some reps running the team during practice just to see how he produces?" conversation with him. The answer was "geezz he's 5'10", no way they're going to waste rep time on someone that isn't at least 6'. Which is/was the attitude of a lot of other people.  To which I respond "then why let him walk-on and hang around?

Maybe he's really smart.
Maybe he could easily grasp Chico's very complicated playbook so it was good to have him around to help McNulty & Smith off the field
Maybe his football IQ is through the roof and he's going to make a great coach someday.
Maybe he really loves football, and he's a walk-on, so as long as he wants to be here paying his own way, what's the difference?

None of that would mean he's going to play well against competition though.  Again, just look at Greer's results.
McCarney was not shy about putting walk-ons on scholarship. If Shanbour is so great, he would likely be on scholarship and at least 3rd on last year's depth chart.

I know he's your guy, so you're going to dig in your heels, and that's fine.  Just dont be surprised if he doesn't see the field... at all.   And don't be surprised if he comes out of fall practice at #3.
