i'm late to the party, but i've discovered these bands...badly love them!!!  avantasia, dragonforce, blind guardian, sabaton, edguy, stratavarius...found a couple of cds of dragonforce in denton, but the others are not around...checked mad records, recycled, movie trading company...any other spots?  i'm a cd guy...do not like doing the mp3 route...don't want the songs on my phone/computer...any other bands similar to the happy power metal that these bands exhibit?

Yeah, I can see that. I gave you a list of bands similar to the ones you listed, which had a Euro Opera-Metal vibe. Therion takes the whole Opera aspect of it pretty far. In fact, they've performed with the Swedish National Opera. Given that, you might want to skip Nightwish.

Though, for my money, just go to the end of the list and hit up Symphony X. No nonsense, straight-forward American Power Shred Metal. Basically, I figure they were in some Music Theory class together one day, and the professor was explaining the complexities of Bach's composition, and one of them said "I can do that on a guitar."

Sounds like the unholy bastard offspring of Pantera and 70's era Kansas.  This is what you'd get if you bred Vulgar Display Of Power with Leftoverture.

Even so, I listened all the way through and will probably do so again.

Not too bad. Didn't know about them, and I'm a long-time Helloween fan (going back to late 80s).

Sort of, kinda related. After 16 years, Watchtower has finally released Concepts of Math. More of a hybrid between Power and Progressive Metal. But solid in my book. Though, probably not to everyone's taste.
