University Fees per student, per semester Total fees collected by university
TXST $300 athletics fee $17,315,569
UTSA $240 athletics fee $12,032,206
UNT $165 athletics fee $10,724,272
UH $250 student services fee $7,260,060
UTEP $180 student services fee $5,935,317
TTU $57.20 athletics fee $3,237,896
TAMU $0 $0
UT $0 $0

Edit: Athletics fees are devoted entirely to supporting sports teams and athletic department administration. Student service fees go toward various activities designed to improve campus life. Those activities can include athletics, but can also include student government, student newspapers, intramurals and more.

When I was a student (graduated 2001) we used to give student service fee money to the athletic department---and it was a heck of a lot more than the $14k figure Vito quotes in 2008.  There are numbers missing here that make this discrepancy/jump look wider than it actually is.

If you assume the above numbers hold true for the 2015 football season, here is how much each G5 school spent in student fees per win:

  1. UH:         $558,466.15
  2. UTEP:     $1,978,439.00
  3. UTSA:     $4,010,735.33
  4. UTSA:     $5,771,856.33
  5. UNT:       $10,724,272.00

UH students really got the best bang for their buck.

Oh, snap!

I think RV's legacy may be the destruction of UNT athletics. There is a very strong anti-athletic segment of UNT's culture. RVis giving them every reason they need to do as much damage as possible to this program.

He definitely transformed basketball over the last 4 years, so in a sense he is right.

He needs to do the right thing and walk away, but his ego and a $375k per year paycheck prevents that.

Believe it or not, at one point in time I would have thought of him as a necessary step to UNT getting where they need to be. Now? His legacy is losing, and losing with superior facilities and budget than just about every other conference member. That is what he will be remembered for at UNT, if not worse.

If a man's car were a reflection of his job performance, Rick Villarreal would be rolling in a 1977 Pinto hatchback.

Athletic Director Rick Villarreal asked his school's oversight board for a financial boost.  His department was working hard to keep up with the rising costs of college sports,
