Defense Keys NT in Season-Opening Win Over Indiana State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (11/22/03) -- Showing off a stifling defense, the North Texas women's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season with an impressive 86-73 win over Indiana State in the opening round of the Indiana Tournament here Saturday night.

Last season North Texas set a new school record in field goal percentage defense. That smothering defense picked up where it left off as the Mean Green held Indiana State to 36 percent shooting and just two of 24 from beyond the arc en route to its first-round win over the Sycamores.

The win sets up the Mean Green in a Sunday match-up against host Indiana in the championship game at 3:00 p.m. The Hoosiers advanced to the title game with a 75-41 victory over Cornell in the other first-round game Saturday.

Junior transfer Jill Medlock led all North Texas scorers with 20 points, including four three-pointers in the second half. Senior Kim Blanton scored 18 points while Jamie Armstrong registered her first double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Stephanie Lisch led Indiana State with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

North Texas led 37-27 at the half and went up by 44-32 with 18:26 to play before the Sycamores went on a 14-6 run. NT freshman Kelsie Edwards' only three-pointer of the night gave the Mean Green a 53-46 lead but Indiana State would not go away.

A two-minute scoring drought by the Mean Green combined with a 13-3 Indiana State run gave the Sycamores a 63-61 lead with 7:20 to play. That's when Medlock connected on the first of her four three-pointers. Moments later, with NT trailing 73-72 with 2:14 to play, another three by Medlock triggered a 14-0 North Texas run to end the game.

The Mean Green has faced Indiana one other time in school history. That game came last season when the Hoosiers posted a 51-43 win at the Super Pit.
