Instead of having his contract bought out and his employment terminated, is there a chance that Tony Benford could be reassigned and retained as an assistant coach?

His head coaching performances have been suspect, possibly due to this being his first head coaching position at any level, but his abilities as an assistant coach, especially concerning recruiting and player evaluations have been exceptional throughout his career.

I'd easy up on player evaluation. And no, no new head coach wants the former head coach hanging around.

But this is UNT athletics, so something this dysfunctional could absolutely be proposed.

Logical way of making lemonade from a lemon...but IMO not practical from a human behavioral point of view. No new coach would want him lurking about. Bad for the morale of the players too. Get the dead horse out before he stinks!

In addition to the points made above, I'll also point out that Benford would still likely be a hot (or at least lukewarm) commodity as an assistant at a power conference program.  If he is not retained here, Benford will have some lucrative coaching options--just not as a D1 head coach.

Just like Vic Trilli.

If it only took hair to coach teams to championships we would have several more banners hanging in the Super Pit!
