This is untrue. Find another AD that outright lies about basketball attendance nationwide to protect himself from having to answer questions about attendance at their university. You can't. There have been multiple examples posted on here of ADs saying simply "this isn't acceptable. We need to do better, myself included." Those words have never passed the lips of one Rick Villarreal.

If this is truly the way you would handle this situation, I hope you never have anything to do with any company where I spend my money.

Burden of proof is on you dude.  I don't care about that crap.  You find me the AD that doesn't lie/stretch truth/CYA... good luck.  I'm sure RV has said things similar to your hypothetical quote above.  And OMG!  An Athletic Director who lies (more likely just talking out of his rear)?   I'm afraid there would only be 1 AD in the whole nation... and it would be YOU!

The righteous attitude of you, along with the other RV vultures on here is comical.  RV is flailing around for dear life. He's a wounded animal that no one will put down.  He's doing what he knows how to do in order to save himself.   The writing is on the wall though.  He's not getting it done where it counts.  Smatresk has to be in Jackson's/BOR's ears. Once he can convince them to pull the trigger, he will.  We all know this... but to turn around and say RV gets no credit, or explain away the good things that have happened around here since he's been AD is myopic at best, dishonest at worst.

If you were in Rick's shoes, you would say the same things.  Don't lie to yourself.   CYA is a game everyone knows well.

The bad faaarrrrr outweighs the good and a blind and deaf man would agree. He needs to go and do we really know for a fact that the bold is in fact true? There are some people on this very board that would beg to differ. To defend the man's record as AD as well as the current momentum and direction of the revenue programs is incomprehensible.

Yeah, that's because he went through and downvoted every single one of my posts. Also, when you have 25K posts...

Then you would be -1241...at least...

I don't always agree with the whiney old hack that can't even play through an injury for the GMG bball game, but the statement of yours is so damn whiney...other people don't determine who you are...

E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E would do/say the same exact things he's doing/saying if you were in his shoes.  Because some catastrophic things have happened under his watch, doesn't mean the good things that have happened should not be attributed to him.

I've actually seen people on here say things like: "I'd just step down if I did so poorly."   L-I-A-R-S...  You would trumpet all of the great things you do/have done, and sweep the bad things under the rug.    JUST LIKE Rick Villareal.

Then you don't know me well enough to make that statement.

I've taken responsibility for screw ups both to my client and internal teams-even when they aren't really mine. I'll have more candid conversations with my superiors when necessary, but I don't lie to cover my backside. I've taken more than one butt chewing over the actions of others and it's likely I'll take more.

Acting with integrity, personal responsibility, loyalty, and leadership is something some people do every day. Others choose to not act that way, but don't act like it doesn't happen. This is also true in the sports world, how many times have you heard a coach say he didn't prepare his players well enough? Star QB saying the loss is on him and I'll be better next time?

I don't know about "faaarrrr", heck, I wouldn't even go so far as to say "the bad outweighs the [overall] good".   And no, I don't know if it's true, but I sure hope it is, if Smatresk is worth his salt.

I've been around long enough to see Rick's entire tenure here (got to campus in 2000, the same time he did).   He has done some amazing things... ESPECIALLY across the highway on what was once a pitiful golf course I used to play.  He deserves credit for those things, just as he deserves criticism (public and private) for his blunders.

There are some 'bottom line' things that have been pointed out ad nauseum: win % in revenue sports, MGC #s, attendance #s, etc... that just have not progressed as they should, or are going backwards.  He cannot rest on his laurels though... not in the arms race that is NCAA D1/FBS athletics.  I am afraid it's time for him to ride off.

However, I also have some trepidation.  It appears as though the bottom line he is really judged against (re: by the BOR/Chancellor) is his budget.  If this is really the only thing that matters to them, then we actually don't need an AD, we need an accountant in there.  Rick has projects up in the air, and I have reservations about whoever Smatresk would replace him with.  The Devil you know could be better than the one you don't.

You're not under the same public scrutiny as an Athletic Director at a very large University.   Your mistakes are not nearly as public as his.  The man can't even trust his ticket staff to do things well for him.  He cans that person, yet he still catches a ton of flack (as he should).

And regarding his integrity, our title IX compliance is top notch, we've never been under any NCAA sanctions under his watch...   He has much integrity.

As for the bolded above...  you say that enough, you get fired.  Plain & simple.   If you don't want to get fired, you say what you have to say to CYA.  Dan McCarney is a PRIME example of this.

They don't get fired for the act of saying it, they get fired for losing too much!

Well, I was +200 and was -200 a day after 90 and I got into it. Coincidence?

There is a limit to the amount of positives and negatives you can give in a day...so unless you pissed off about 80 folks on the exact same day, yes...a coincidence or not a true fact as stated by you...

Yes. I am not renewing for the second year. They found my threshold!  (But remember, I live about 8 hours drive away and kept them for several years.)

Think more of yourself than to allow internet "votes" about your opinion. I probably use the up and down vote less than 90% of the people on here. Because I think they are stupid, encourage bullying to limit opinions, and are just very 3rd grade.

You aren't that important, Ryan. Neither are your opinions.

That's because people with any kind of life would never need that "knowledge."

The jury is still out. Verdict will be handed down after the spring game.

I do not wish to get into a pissing contest with those who would like to replace our current Athletic Director. I would like to point out that UNT men's basketball team has been to 3 NCAA tournaments in its history. I have been to all 3, 2 of them on Rick Villarreal's watch. In addition, the EAGLES have played in a total of 7 football bowl games.I have been to 5 of them, again during  Rick Villarreal's tenure as our Athletic Director. I know that life is "what have you done for me lately?". However, I also know that it is neither black nor white, but many shades of gray.Just saying.....

With the utmost respect, @wardly, I cannot relate to someone who takes the accomplishments you just listed and somehow justifies the trend of hires after JJ.  Those were incredible runs - I was there for many and can relate - but I don't kid myself into thinking this is where we belong.

We all know JJ is an RV hire, but just about everything since then has been a trainwreck.

Less to your point but an irony I just realized: the very coach that took us to those 4 NO Bowls was almost fired by RV after that 2001 LaMo loss.  The very people that we loathed back then for making us keep The Buick are now making RV look a little better (whether it is justified or not).

Back on topic, we can do much, much better.  We should expect much, much better.

Update on RV and the revenue hires he's made in the last 10 years. If men or women can't seriously turn things around quick, we're looking at 1 winning season out of 21 for this crop. And, you know, 145 games under .500.

WBB:

- 25-67 Stephens (2008-2011)

- 15-16 Aston (2011-2012)

- 28-61 Peterson (2012-2015)

- 8-13 Jalie Mitchell (2015-2016)

76-157 total

MBB:

- 12-20 Benford (2012-2013)

- 16-16 Benford (2013-2014)

- 14-17 Benford (2014-2015)

- 9-15 Benford

51-68 total

Football:

- 6-37 Dodge (2007-2010)

- 22-32 Mccarney (2011-2015)

- 3-9 Canales (2010, 2015)*

28-69 total

*31-78 total including Canales

Combined Total:

155-294

*158-303 including Canales

145 games under .500

Meh.  My tickets for 2016 are renewed, so I don't need to speak with anybody in the ticket office for another year.  Not giving up my seats for anyone here.  Not giving up my seats for anyone in the AD.  I'm with Silver. This is my school, and these are my seats, in my little piece of real estate in my stadium.  Everything else will come and go, but you can pry my seats out of my cold, dead ass.

Then as far as I'm concerned, they are yours to keep.
