Rice Inks $3.5 Million 3 Game Deal w/Texas

I've said this before, but please explain to me why we couldn't do this with a team like Nebraska, a school that has lost all ties with Texas. Besides RV's lazy ass, name me one other reason why they wouldn't play us in the Cotton Bowl? Ask yourself why we couldn't do that with someone like LSU, too.

Texas did not enter into this unless they thought it was best for them.  So now , we were ok with five games at Apogee and one in Dallas.  What credibility does having your head handed to you in Houston instead of Austin give you.

Any time a major P5 team is willing to pay you 3.5 mill for a 2 and 1 it makes no sense not to take it when it means you are only going to play a few miles away from your campus.  If Oklahoma came calling for the same deal and we had to play one of those in Arlington? You better believe I would do that in a heart beat. We can buy the smaller teams to come in as we already are to balance the schedule... But this would still be a no brainier.

And as of right now, Texas wouldn't hand Houstons ass to them...

It shows your fan base that you can bring someone besides something called Middle Tennessee State to the Metroplex.

Would I prefer a P5 home game at Apogee? Sure. But UT will never do that. This is better than whoring our 20 year old young men on a consistent basis, which is the only scheduling idea to pop into Rick Villarreal's head. Ever.

This is purely a bid for Houston exposure.  UNT couldn't get this done because UT already has at least 1 game in DFW every year.

Don't believe it's about Houston exposure?  See Charlie Strong's comments from June of last year:  "the thing we would like to do, and I know eventually it will happen, is that we come here on a consistent basis. Maybe we can get a game here, because we have so much support here with our fans. This is such a great alumni base. We go to Dallas now, and we'd just like to come here."

Other interesting notes from the article:

"The recruiting talk underscores an important point about the value of a Texas football game in Houston -- with Herman's team now a legitimate player for high-level local prospects and Texas A&M winning seven head-to-head battles over Texas in the greater Houston area in the 2014 and 2015 classes, the recruiting trends there aren't especially positive at the moment.

Throw in the fact that the number of people in Houston identifying as Aggie fans increased by 26% over the last five years while Longhorns fans decreased by 30%"

No, UNT couldn't get this done because UNT's AD has stated very publicly that he prefers to whore out the football team than to even try to schedule this type of game.

It can't happen if you don't ask, and this AD has NEVER asked, by his own admissions.

They didn't ink this deal with Houston, they inked it with Rice.

This is a deal entirely in UT's favor.

Wanna knock RV for not brining better teams to Apogee?  Fine.  But whining that we don't play our whore games in "neutral" locations that are virtual home games for the opposition?  Spare me

Good grief. The hate mongers on here are now complaining about not signing neutral site games that they once argued against?  If that type of game were ever signed they would absolutely scream in protest.

The hate is starting to rot their brains to the point that they can't remember their arguments.

Please start trolling other team's boards.  Your act has grown tired and your actions have done nothing but ruin the reputation of this board and drive off fans.  Not sure that is what Harry had in mind.

Ii'm not at all in favor of playing anything called a "home game" anywhere  except Apogee.    There has to be a big program that would come to Apogee on a 2 for 1 deal somewhere.  We spent way too much in rah-rah currency to start going to Dallas or Arlington for a home game.  And some of us spent more Monet than we could realistically afford to get Apogee off the ground.

Correct, Rice not Houston.  Sorry

but if we are already whoring ourselves out, this kind of deal is the best situation for us. I still think their AD is smarter to negotiate something like this than ours has come up with.

Clearly we would all prefer 1 and 1 games and all our games to be played in Apogee.  Who would be against that?!?

But our AD has clearly said that he will whore out the football team for the department to get paid. He isn't moving from that. So this kind of deal is the best case scenario that we can get out of an AD that we have. But, even with that, I know there isn't any way this would happen. We don't have a decent scheduler. We are more content with multiple 5 home game seasons and getting people here at home that no one has ever heard of or cared about.  Let's keep going with that strategy!

1.  We have tried a game at the Cotton Bowl before during the fair.  Unless it is UT/OU, it is a failure.

2.  2 for 1 deals lead to 5 game home schedules in the future.

3.  Playing a P5 school once a year is what our AD has said he would do.  This gives our players a chance against those schools, if our coach has any balls, and helps pay the bills like every other G5 does.

4.  A couple of years ago, these same posters that are on her praising this deal Rice gave UT threw a fit if our AD considered this same type of deal.

5.  We have a home field.  It is called Apogee.  Paying to play at AT&T and then losing concession and parking revenue would led to the need to schedule another P5 in the future to offset the lost revenue.

6.  Why does Rice have to go and pay for NRG when they have cavernous Rice stadium?

Good for Rice, if that is what they want.  No thank yoju from this end.

Not when done as ODU did it with Virginia. They are actually getting paid 400k for a one and one while playing one whore game.

They get 800k total for that whore game, but will have to pay an FCS $400k to balance their home schedule that year.

So, they get the attendance and legitimacy bump of playing Virginia in a one and one while still balancing their schedule for the whore game and still pocketing 400k.

Do you get that? Do you get that RV is completely incapable of even considering this idea, much less selling it to any P5 out there?

As far as constantly whoring out our young men is "giving them a chance against a P5," that's a complete joke, and you know it. What are we under RV, 0-40 in whore games? Ya, that's some chance, isn't it?

But I'm sure you will celebrate that 24 point loss to Georgia as a "close game" from here to eternity.

So essentially Texas gets a 3 for 0. No thanks. Three away body bag games? Lol. And y'all wanna do this at AT&T Stadium and lose an Apogee game? Hahahaha this board has reached new heights of stupidity.

well, not the board totally. One or two people.

This is the same as having SMU as an alternate site home game last year, as 90 likes to say.

Except SMU isn't UT, at least not to the college football world beyond this idiot board.

And SMU didn't pay us $1 million.

Pointing out the lack of effort by our AD in that he could/would never negotiate such a deal is no more whining than telling us what Batchelders' opinion was toward your idea to promote home openers.  Not sure how you can't see that?

Rice is getting paid a million to host a home game that is less than 3 miles from their campus.

Doesn't fit his argument. Doesn't understand that getting $1 million will allow to pay an FCS $400k to balance the schedule while still pocketing $600k. Doesn't get this this is basically taking a 400k discount on a whore game in order to get a return game in DFW.

And doesn't want to get it, because that would mean we would have a point.

And that guy can't have that. At all.

Rice is getting paid a million dollars to play two games in Austin, which is an awful deal. There is nothing good about this from Rice's perspective. UNT should steer clear from any arrangement like this with a P5 school.

No, conveniently leave out they ARE GETTING A HOME GAME IN HOUSTON in your post.

This fan base truly deserves what it has gotten the last 10 plus years.

You mean they are playing a defacto home game for UT's Houston fans. They couldn't even convince UT to play at their own stadium. It's actually quite nice of Rice to be so hospitable to UT's demands...Pathetic.

If RV made a deal like this you would be raising hell about how he couldn't get more money out of the arrangement or how he couldn't convince UT to come to Apogee, going on and on about how he's a crappy negotiator. But since another school made the deal you'll take the complete opposite side and bitch. It's what trolls like you do. Sad life, really.

Nope. UT is a name I know we could never get to Apogee. And I wouldn't do this deal with Texas Tech, because that is the type of program we can get to Apogee. Ask Texas St...

The main point is Rice thought outside the box, got paid a cool million, and got a game in Houston.

Do you honestly think RV possesses the negotiating skills to accomplish such a deal? If so, what evidence led you to that conclusion.

Yall say I bitch about everything. When there is SO MUCH wrong with everything at the AD, what else do you want to do? Ignore it and hope it goes away like you did for the last 10 years?

Aint happening.

And people are like "but then we would have to get our ass kicked twice in Austin!" Please explain to me the difference between getting your ass kicked at Florida, at Iowa, at Arkansas, at Wisconsin, and at Texas A&M as opposed to 2 ass kickings in Austin, Tx?

At least you can drive to Austin for the ass kicking and have a get together in a bar owned by a UNT alumni. Not really feasible for those Floroda, Wisconsin, and Iowa games...
