But we don't have a full class, we've filled in our holes left by Mac's debacle with transfers. Our average score is on par with the rest of the mid-to-low conference.

I know everyone thinks recruiting stars doesn't matter until you are top of your own conference, but let's be honest--in our specific situation with an incredibly small class, we are not easily the worst in the conference. We are comfortably among the worst in the conference, with some mid-tier transfers to bolster things.

We have 60 players on scholarship and the ability to sign a full class of 25 per BillySee.

This isn't a small class unless UNT makes it that way.

Patience.  It isn't as bad as what it is being made out to be.  Good lord, you would think you know who is writing these articles.

Several players with multiple offers.  One player is a couple of hundreths of a point from being rated as 3 stars, a large offensive lineman with multiple offers, a big pickup at DT with a highly recruited player, seemingly several QBs where we are in the running.  It can certainly end up badly, but let's see how LT & Co finishes before we jump.

Breathe.

I think Vito is keying strictly on the high school/JUCO recruiting class...  not transfers, so as exciting as the English and Morris additions are, they are not included in this particular story.  He has every right to write this story at this point in time.   Due to the poor, or just plain lack of recruiting last season, we're behind the 8-ball.  It sucks, but that's where we are, RIGHT NOW.

Now, once Littrell hits it big with a fantastic class when signing day comes, I hope Vito's article has a different voice.   That's not for Vito to create though... it's for Littrell & Co.  Vito only reports the facts.  His job is a reporter for the Denton Record Chronicle... not MeanGreenSports.

Rating a recruiting class before their junior season is like the preseason football polls.  We won't really know what we have until they are signed, get to campus and develop.  I trust this coaching staff to develop the talent we have and the talent they bring in.  Decent QB play would have changed last year's result quite a bit.

Now, since rating a recruiting class is the thing to do this time of year, why don't we wait and see what our final grade is after signing day.  A lot can change in the next two weeks.

NO, but if that happens then great.

I don't think getting a commitment from a kid with FCS offers will change UNT's position...

Starkel is the dude with offers from A&M and UCLA and the like.
I think you're thinking of Burns from Oklahoma.  If so, he's starting to get more interest from all kinds of programs too.  We haven't offered him yet either.

That's who Withers was talking about. Burns

I agree that it is a less than perfect situation.  That said, look at our recruiting classes the past 2 times we have brought in new coaches:

The 2007 class (Dodge's first): We only had 3 commits before January 20th (today's date).  It ended up being a pretty good class--the main problem was that too few of them remained in the program for more than a couple of years.

The 2011 class (Mac's first): We only had 4 commits before January 20th.  That class ended up being significantly better than the 2012 class and probably better than the 2013 class (it certainly was on paper).

The 2016 class (Littrell's first): On January 20th, we have 4 (maybe 5) high school commits, 3 juco commits, and 2 P5 transfers who look to be better at their positions than anything we've had at those positions in a while.  I would love to see more, but we look to be better situated at this point in the game than in the past when we've had a coaching change.

Great info thanks! I think the reason everybody is on edge is because it has been so damn quite! Could be the philosophy of the coaching staff. GMG

We won't come close to contending against CUSA members using any rating service because we'll likely have less recruits AND transfers (except JUCOs) are not included.  If you could add in English and Morris at their high school ratings that would put us near the middle of the pack with only nine recruits.  I'm more concerned with the average rating per recruit.

Exactly...UAB is #1 and its due to the fact they have 33 commits.

If the report above from the thread on Burns is correct and any of those schools offer, then he becomes a better get.   At this point, UNT hasn't even offered either.

Actually, he doesn't.  Their offers or failures to offer won't make him any better or worse of a QB than he is today.

Sorry, I had to say it.  I know what you're saying.  I have enjoyed tracking recruiting more than most people, but your comment just helps to illustrate that there's a lot of arbitrariness that enters into it.

If if and buts...

Right now he has an FCS offer with less than 3 weeks left in recruiting season.

Let that sink in.

1. Alec Morris has not thrown a meaningful pass in 4 years. I think he will be a big talent upgrade at QB but to chalk up 3000 yards is jumping the gun a bit. Let's see how spring practice goes before we get too excited. Since 2001 UNT has had exactly zero 3000 yard passers. DT was the closest in 2013 at 2896 yards. This includes Dodge's spread offense years. It's gonna take a lot more than decent productivity out of Morris.

2. Wilson is indeed a talent but he will be looked upon to provide more receiving yards at the expense of some on the ground. 1000 all-purpose yards may be closer to reality. He also needs to get his fumbles in check if he wants to stay on the field.

3. What very good skill position players are you talking about to put around Morris? Wilson has All-conference potential. The receivers all have potential but little else. Smiley is the leading returning receiver with 25 catches and then Goree with 15. Rutherford had 3 catches. We don't have much proven talent at WR. At TE we have Dillman who is a RS-Freshman who has yet to catch a pass.

Not sure how we could expect any receivers to prove their talent with the QB play we've had over the last 2 years.

He produces the facts with a particular tone mixed in throughout. It's almost as if he's a smut alum covering North Texas athletics. Writing an articule of this nature only does nothing but attempt to cement our totem pole status and does no good for anyone involved moving forward. It's a tacky article.

Hate to break it to you Ben, but sometimes the truth hurts.
Right now, North Texas is not in a good position.  And honestly, there hasn't been much positive news for Brett to report.  If you want all-good-all-the-time stories, go to MeanGreenSports.com and never click on Vito's blog again.  I don't know Brett Vito, but I HIGHLY DOUBT he has some sort of conspiracy planned to keep North Texas athletics down by only highlighting negative aspects of the program.
We suck in football.  We suck in basketball....  These are truths in which we should be able to agree.  What else is he supposed to say?
