Agreed. On the downside, whomever he chooses will be his 3rd school in a year. He showed up to Nebraska out of shape and didn't know the playbook. The upside is that he was a 4-star STUD in high school that a lot of big name schools wanted. If he plays to that potential here in a hopefully comfortable environment closer to home, family, and friends then it will be the jackpot. If it is the same old story for him then we will have one less scholarship player on board at a position where we have not had a problem in recent memory. I think it is well worth the risk and a no-brainer.

This right here is what makes this move extremely low-risk for UNT.   Not like Wilson or Ivery are going anywhere.

Do you recall the turmoil around his departure from OU?

I think it was something about him being a whistle-blower about the length of practices going over NCAA regulations or something.

He worked out here, and I'm so glad he did, and I love that guy.  But the above does not really endorse a "reputation for hard work".

Everyone has a reason for transferring.  Any player: HS recruit, JUCO, transfer, walk-on, whatever, is a dice roll.  It's just a matter of identifying their ceilings that determines their 'jackpot' status.  From there, you have to overcome any inhibitors (re: coach) that stand in the way of the 'jackpot'.

There was no turmoil on his character or work habits.  He had started on OU's special teams as a freshman, forced fumbled, blocked kicks...he was really good, even at that level.

He was also up to par in the classroom.  That he would be involved in calling out his own program, for possible NCAA violations isn't a mark of bad character...to me.  But, I value that UNT has never had an NCAA violation in football.

In all, Trice was squared away on and off the field when he arrived.

We've had plenty who were not - and, who were more highly rated than Trice.  Some quarterback named Berglund comes to mind.

This kid who couldn't get into Wisconsin, couldn't stay in shape over a summer knowing he was going to a college football program with elite tradition, then quitting on them in the middle of the season...let me just say that, if he even shows up here, I'll be skeptical of him until he proves he's grown up and can take care of his business on and off the field like the majority of the big boy players on scholarship do.

For the program, I want players who respect that having a scholarship is a unique and rare opportunity.  I don't want kids who feel like they are automatically owed respect and position just because of what they accomplished in high school.  You are not going to sit on your ass during the week while everyone else is working and have things go well for you at this level.

Texas A&M-Commerce is just a hike over 380 if you are looking to skate by.  This level is different, and this kid doesn't seem to realize that.

Separate the men from the boys, please.
