Will NT win more than 1 game in 2016?

I'm not sure why all the downvotes.  Unless you're being intentionally snarky, it's a fair question.

We were the worst team in FBS last year.  We are in a place comparable to where Southern Miss was in 2012, when they went 0-12 (...although they had gone 11-2 the previous year, winning C-USA, their bowl game, and finishing as the 20th ranked team in the country.  They were certainly in a better spot talent-wise then we are presently).

USM went about solving their problem in a similar way to what we did--they came up with a huge buyout to fire their underperforming defensive-minded coach, and hired the OC from one of the most productive offenses in the country.

The following year they won one game.  The year after that, they won three.  And finally this year, they won C-USA West, went to a bowl game, and look to be well-positioned for the future.

As much as I'd love to say the mere presence of Seth Littrell on the sidelines will add an extra 5 or 6 wins to our record, I have to think that a Southern Miss-like trajectory is more realistic.

Talent wise we were probably a 3 or 4 win team in 2015.  Anybody that watches football would see that UTEP and SMU did not have much either.

Fans keep making statements about our talent, but are ignoring the talent issues our opponents will have next year.

The one exception to this is at QB.   I have no doubt that Littrell and his staff will fix that problem.

Reffertt new nickname "Pops" oldest guy on the staff?

Judging from the look of him, I'd recommend not...at least, that is, if you hope to retain your spleen.

Fair questions aren't welcome, just the same rah rah we saw after DMac and Dodge hires is wanted. The attempts to shout down will continue.

To all the realist amongst us, stay strong.

You know, the last line of the article had nothing to do with what Vito was reporting.

I'm getting a little tired of him doing that.  The article was on the staff being assembled.

I appreciate his coverage, but really, what did that have to do with the rest of the article?

Stick to the topic.

Looks like Mainord was let go recently by Kentucky:  http://www.kentucky.com/sports/college/kentucky-sports/uk-football/article50525370.html

This is not necessarily a negative thing, as you get some value in that you have landed a position coach from the SEC.  I also read that while at Sam Houston he recruited West Houston, so he could be our guy in H-Town.

From the article it looks as if Mainord was fairly active in recruiting.

Mean Green 93 to 98 has hit the nail on the head using So.Miss. as a template for success. Also I would like an answer to Green Rex's question if anyone knows. What is the difference between an assistant head coach and associate head coach? I just assume they are puffed up job descriptions to justify paying a coach more money.

So miss has been brought up a few times.  Their turn around was not due to waiting for their team to gel like some have suggested.  They had some talent returning, but they would have been the same average team had it not been for 3 reasons.

#1.  Jucos/transfers.

The top WRs for so miss.  Thomas SR-JUCO.  Martin SR-transfer UH

The top defensive players Anderson MLB-JUCO.  Antoine FS-JUCO.

#2. Seniors played at a high level.  (No brainer, I guess)

#3. Easier schedule.  Played hard games against Nebraska and miss state, but also balanced that with austin peay and txst.  Biggest help was drawing Charlotte and Old Dom from the East.  UTEP, UNT, and Rice were not good.

You kinda forgot the #1 reason:

They developed a VERY good QB.

We are where USM was three years ago and where SMU was before last year.  USM went winless, SMU won one game, then both hired offensive-minded head coaches, saw improvement in play in the next season and on the recruiting front, even though they lost a lot (USM won 1 game in 2013, SMU won 2 games last year only because they played us in OOC). USM followed that one win season up with a few more wins in 2014 and then won the CUSA Western Division in 2015 with solid QB play and senior leadership. SMU appears to be ready to make another step forward in their quest for being relevant again, but probably aren't going to get back to winning any division championship this upcoming season.

This is where we are as a program. The bright side is that we have two schools on our schedule every year in the G5 that we can hopefully follow in improving our team. The dark side is that we are buried so far down right now, that it may take even longer to get back up to being bowl eligible. The biggest question for 2016 will be if Littrell can make any headway with Texas HS coaches and recruits--if he can, 2017 and 2018 will be bright. If not, we probably aren't going to re-visit .500 anytime soon.

Nah...Mullens did his part, but adding 3 JUCOs starting on offense and 3 starting on defense seems to be more of an impact.  Then you add the grad transfer, that's 7 starters.  4 performed at a level that got them all cusa recognition.  They also had about 6 more jucos/transfers on the 2 deep.  JUCO/transfers is my #1 reason.

How many games could we had won had our jucos panned out like theirs did?
