IF the Big 12 adds 2 teams when their present T.V. contract expires I would expect U.H. to be in the mix regardless of what U.T. wants. The conference only has a few places to look for members. BYU, which would be a good fit for them as they would be able to keep their BYU network, which is similar to the Longhorn Network , Cincy, which would give W,V. a travel partner[I must admit that I have never understood how travel partners work], and perhaps Memphis. Other than those schools I can't come up with anyone else to consider.

I am hearing UT doesn't want them. That appears to be the issue. The big 12 is basically a Monarchy.

UNT should. Because Houston may be on the verge of where we would like to be in our wildest dreams.

Of course, the powers that be at UNT clearly don't care, having left an abject failure of an AD in place even after running EVERY SINGLE revenue program into the ground.

So take a look at what could have been if UNT cared one iota about athletics. It's just down the road in Houston.

From what I know, UH and North Texas (State) were not all that far apart in the mid-70s, especially after we shut them under Fry. But UH got into the SWC Club and won the conference very quickly, as well as becoming a basketball force, gaining complete backing from the entire SWC. North Texas got blocked from the club--and then basically gave up for the next 20 years. UH still has major donors from those SWC days. We are still missing hundreds of thousands of potential donors because of what we allowed to happen athletics-wise after Fry (finally) left for greener pastures in Iowa. We literally did everything wrong from 1979 until 1995, from a football standpoint. And even when we moved back up, we did it in the cheapest possible way for another 15 years.

When UH is bad, they still get a ton of recruits from that area of the state, both in Houston and around there. IOW, they have talent and they have built in-roads with the high school coaches around there. When they are good, they get the City of Houston's attention more than usual. We have to get our recruiting up to a level that is somewhat like this and hope that Denton will change its views toward our football program to hopefully follow their path.

UH is way ahead of the other G5 schools in our region right now--from what they pay, how they get covered and supported, who they get to play against in Houston, and how they are perceived by recruits.

Very true and it starts with leadership. We have to contend with TCU and SMU in our market but that is no excuse for the program to be mediocre as it has been since we moved back to the FBS level. Dropping down was a huge mistake because we did not have a vision of how to make a FCS program work in this "front runner/bandwagon fan" market. We have a ton of untapped alumni money in our immediate area that is basically off limits due to what poor leadership has done to the UNT athletic brand since Fry left.

Define mid-70s. Yes in 1975, UH was bad, but consistency has never been UH's thing, especially since Yeoman redshirted anyone of value that year to prep for the first year in the SWC.

UH finished ranked in 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978, and 1979. including 2 top 10 finishes and 2 top 5 finishes. 1972 UH went 6-4-1, 1975 2-8, 1977 6-5.

So yes UNT was better than UH a couple of years in the 1970s. But other than those 2 years, UH was far beyond anything UNT has ever done.

And to be clear, UH finished ranked in 1966 - 1969 too. So it wasn't joining the SWC where UH became established. Our success and rankings forced the SWC to take UH partly to control us (SWC forced changes in UH recruiting and even required our opponents to determine we played our home games for a few years). The SWC required the football team to wait 5 years to compete in the conference even though we officially a member in 1972.

And UH was a basketball force long before the SWC too. Final fours in 1967 and 1968. Ever heard of the game of the century between UH and UCLA at the Astrodome?
