Thank you, Rick Villarreal, for destroying another revenue sport at UNT.

Apparently your reward is a lifetime contract.

BTW, just for those who aren't putting 2 and 2 together, this is after RV's 15th year at the helm as the AD, as well as during the 4th year of his hire, Tony Benford.

There was a time where we were thrilled to be averaging double what we do now, but that took decades to accomplish. And in one, swift 3+ year epic fail, we are right back to the attendance glory days of Vic Trilli as our head coach at games in the Super Pit.

And people still wonder why these venues are usually half to 80% empty on gamedays in Denton...

And we are back there because RICK VILLARREAL REFUSED TO FIX A PROBLEM.

He let stupid pride get in his way and chose that pride over this school's basketball program. This is reason alone for him to be fired.

Yet there are so many others.

Only at North Texas.

Its not going to change anytime soon, either. He is too insulated now. I applaud RV for winning the battle--he built up his own protection that has obviously worked. Very few could even attempt to do this, much less accomplish it. At least for myself, I couldn't handle putting up with the ineptness anymore. If UNT's leadership doesn't care about winning, why should I?

More importantly, why should anyone donate one dime to something the university so clearly cares so little about.

Clearly, after graduating hundreds of thousands of alumni, as well as currently educating several thousand students, while employing thousands of various employees, while being surrounded by millions of people, most people look at UNT Athletics and have made the decision not to spend a dime or even one second in following UNT Sports...

Ryan, there is a delayed reaction in play here. It is now renewal time. I suggest you hide and watch until about June; then raise the question after trying to get renewal statistics. JMO.

Does it matter?  He's an alum, donates, gives his time and energy and cares about his university.  All he is asking and demanding is accountability which severely lacks in regards to UNT athletics.

This. Those stats are hidden better than the arc of the covenant.

For the millionth time, because I have clubs seats. I would be walking away from a substantial chunk of change. Otherwise, I would have been gone before this season. I have already walk away from basketball completely.

I would encourage anyone considering club seats not to waste your money as long as RV is the AD. Leave yourself an out. Eventually, you will want to use it.

But I'm not surprised to see a former "member" of the AD encouraging someone demanding results to please just leave. It's kinda what UNT does.

Really sad to see these attendance numbers. I was at UNT from 2005 to 2011. What great fun it was to watch attendance grow through those years with major student involvement, new traditions, Pit Crew development (with crazy hats and other attire), MBB team occasionally entering through Pit Crew area, multiple NCAA tourney trips, etc. I believe we started to average close to 5000 just prior to JJ departure with occasional near sell-outs with big time opponents in the house.  Benford destroyed all of this. I hope that we can recover, but it will be difficult to rebuild all of this....We really had something special.
