Neal Smatresk, president of the University of North Texas, hit two pedestrians with his Toyota Highlander on the night of Thursday, Dec. 10, according to a police report obtained by the Denton Record-Chronicle.

The Denton Fire Department took both pedestrians to Denton Regional Medical Center. Police allowed Smatresk to leave the scene in his vehicle. Neither he nor the pedestrians were charged with a traffic violation.

The accident happened as Smatresk was leaving a shopping center at 1776 Teasley Lane at 9:19 p.m., according to the report. He was alone in the car. The intersection is two blocks south of Teasley’s intersection with South Interstate 35E.

Smatresk, 64, was turning left onto Teasley after the light turned green at the shopping center’s private driveway. As he made the turn, he hit the two pedestrians as they were crossing Teasley Lane, the police report states.

15 to go

Think bigger... That address is literally right around the corner from the Rudy's where they have the coach radio shows.

Was December 10th a Benford Radio Show night? Maybe Neal was actually trying to mercy kill a 2-6 Benford, fresh off his 32 point loss to Southern Illinois?

I used to live across the street.  There's a dive bar and a tattoo parlor and not much else there.  Seems like an odd place for him.  There are some hotels right there too.  It's a conspiracy!

I've had company from out of state, when we were touring Denton, want to get some Texas barbeque.  I took them to Metzler's for a German-Texan sandwich.  Always get that with the beer battered onion rings.  Even your teetotaling Mormon relatives can't resist.

Let's review Dr. S' options while visiting 1776 Teasley:

  1. Getting a tat at Ace's tatoo parlor
  2. Knocking back a cold one at Vitty's sports bar
  3. Dropping off one of his bitches at the Family pet clinic
  4. Picking up some smokes at Vapormax
  5. Getting the screen on his phone replaced at Boost Mobile
  6. Satisfying his sugar craving with a dozen donut holes at Teasley Donut
  7. Enjoying a mani/pedi at Kristy's Nails
  8. Shooting the breeze while getting a cut and a shave at Troy's barber shop
  9. Interviewing a potential AD replacement at DoubleDave's Pizza Works

My money is on #7.

This isn't a "personal matter." He's the president of UNT and struck two people with his car.

It looks bad for Smatresk to say nothing about this when it happened. Instead, he waited to see if the media found out about it, and when they did offered no explanation. As the school president, I think he'd expect more from other leaders at the school who work under him.

Well that certainly piqued my curiosity.  Went to the google about Mormons cooking with wine.  The banter back and forth is akin to asking people on this message board if Todd Dodge had potential as a college coach.

My guess is that since no one was cited after the accident that his attorney(either personal or UNT) told him to just say nothing. Might be civil litigation down the road and keeping your mouth shut is ALWAYS the best advice.

He's the leader of a university. That job makes his actions a reflection of the school, and as such he has a responsibility to be accountable. There's more at issue here than his own personal criminal or civil liability.

If the circumstances are as minor as the story describes, he could have issued a statement through the school explaining that the day after it occurred. Getting ahead of a story is usually a smarter move than letting it look like you had something to hide.

I agree that he his held to a higher standard as he is the president of one of the largest universities in the nation. However, if his attorney told him to zip it then he is best served, from a legal standpoint, to zip it.

This is the best advice for Smatresk
