Georgia State was the winning bid to purchase Turner Field and surrounding area.  They're going to convert Turner Field to a football stadium, build a baseball stadium on the site of the old Fulton County Stadium, and put student housing and whatnot in.  Here's a side-by-side present day plus artist rendering.  I gotta say that if the football stadium is going to look anything like this picture, color me not very impressed.

Overall, it really is good for them.  I hope that artist rendering for football is just super preliminary and they do something better with it.  Gonna be tough since Turner Field is structurally built for baseball.

I'm assuming an on-campus stadium is not an option due to location, so I guess this is about as good as it will get for them, but not terribly impressed.

Its weird that they would have student housing so far away? I get that you have no space but its 2 miles away from Campus. I guess this is Georgia's version of UTSA. Small Shitty campus in a big city

Actually Turner was first built as a track stadium for the 1996 olympics and then converted into the baseball stadium.  That should help some of the redesign of turning it into a football stadium.

I may be wrong but I believe GS is in the the heart of Downtown Atlanta and like very very near to Georgia Tech.

Have a buddy that teaches in their B School. They just dont have room to expand downtown. At this point, anything they can get is a bonus

It was designed with the transition to a baseball stadium in mind though. Will be interesting to see how they transition it to football. The way the Portland Timbers transitioned Providence Park into a soccer and football (Portland State) facility is one of the better jobs I've seen of it.

They're located in the hood. An on campus stadium wouldn't be safe either.

Been some time I've been to ATL but I don't remember it being in the ghetto. That said almost all the universities in the ghetto areas are usually super safe because the security is extra beefed up.

It was quite an achievement of design and engineering, but it was always the plan for the Braves to move into Centennial Olympic Stadium after the 1996 Summer Games.
