One officer should not and would not have been dispatched to a person with a weapon call, unless UNT police are practicing 1950 policing.

If police would have waited for a force of 5 officers, the suspect may have injured or killed one or more people. Then Greenit would be on here blaming the police for being cowards for not responding and handling the situation.

With people like him, it's always going to be the police's fault. Probably because he got a speeding ticket as a 19 year old and can't get over it...

It's common place with many departments to assign a call to one officer, but with it being given that other officers will respond.  I've been the only officer DISPATCHED to a domestic in progress, only to be the second or third officer on scene.  Or, as I pull up first on scene, backup is a couple of blocks away.  Last December, we had a shots fired call, it was dispatched to the sergeant, myself and the other officer who were at dinner, left immediately to backup.

Wait...just curious...who's the 3rd besides you and Emmitt?

I'm not going to out them.  It is up to them if they want to disclose who they are and their position.

Definitely don't want you to do that at all. I just enjoy getting perspective from those with experience and wanted to keep an eye out for something I thought everyone else knew. Thanks!

No sweat, and I know you weren't wanting me to do that.  Just don't want you to think I'm dodging the question.  He may send you a PM, but I didn't even know until he told me.

For a little perspective, this happened to Indian River County Deputy Christopher Lester this past Friday night in Florida. He is lucky the suspect only shot the deputy in the leg before the deputy returned fire and struck the suspect twice. The deputy got lazy on this stop, but it's also how the greenit's of this thread want police to approach suspects. This is why you don't:

The suspect draws a gun from behind his back after striking officer in the face.

Coffee was released from prison last year after serving time for charges in 1993 of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, according to NBC affiliate WPTV. His rap sheet includes 11 felony arrests and four felony convictions, the station reported.

Coffee was arrested earlier this month on drug charges, and is due to appear in court..

Nice.

you would often drive 5 minutes to other towns to back each other up.

This makes the area on 35E just north of the Lewisville Lake Bridge lots of fun.  You've got Lake Dallas, Corinth, Hickory Creek, and State Troopers all monitoring about a four-mile stretch of road.  Before construction began, I became very well acquainted with the bend they'd park behind waiting for speeders.  Even if taking the greatest of care to follow all traffic laws, it's one of the most nerve wracking stretches of road for me to drive on.

This appears to be a classic example of someone who just will not modify his behavior sufficiently to co-exist with society. This guy belongs in the slammer for life, he has had plenty of opportunities to change.

That guy's criminal history brings up another point.

What did the UNT cop know about the ax wielding suspect when he arrived on scene? Did he know the ax guy's criminal history? Family history? Mental history? Did he know ax man was a student?

No.

Why didn't he take the time to find out?

Because ax man was approaching him aggressively with an ax telling the officer to shoot/kill him.

Not a lot you can "check out" in that situation.

Sad for everyone involved. A stupid drunk/high decision cost ax man his life, and cost two seperate families a grieving Christmas that they will never forget. Just sad.
