I was in Galveston earlier this week on business.  I saw several Gallery Furniture ads, mostly with women doing the pitch.  There is a mayoral and city council election going on in Houston and one political ad featured Jim Macavale (sp) .  In this ad, Mac did all the talking and promised that if voters would elect his guy, they would save money.  And as he said the "save money" part, he reached into his hip pocket and pulled out a wad of cash and waved it at the viewer.  

 

He's obviously quite a public figure in the Houston area.

Mattress Mac is a good example of why you can't let your athletics program depend entirely on big money donors. They sometimes get mad, take their ball and go home.

A program needs a solid base of supporters at all financial levels. Including Pissant.

Back to the topic...

I'm from the Houston area and grew up watching Mattress Mac wave his money around in commercials on channel 39's weekly Sam Houston Colosseum wrestling program. He is a local celebrity in the Houston area. Wish we could get him back to supporting the Mean Green.

Those are his daughters.  I think he's starting to slowly turn the business over to his children - he is 65.

Easy on "he IS 65" STIX.  If you're very very lucky, you'll be 65 one day.  His daughters are very pretty.

I have no clue as to what you're trying to say.  All I am saying is at 65, he's probably looking to lessen his workload and to ensure the business stays in the family (I doubt he'll ever retire).  And... I'm already 55.  God willing, I will at least see 65.  Hopefully, at least 85, like my mom.

Well the problem back then is he was the only big money donor.  Well that is a relative term, I understand.  This season with all of our troubles we still had men stand on the field with giant checks equaling over 3 million dollars.  Even more money has been donated behind the scenes for us to afford to buy out Mac and pay Littrell and his staff competitive salaries.  Yet it seems to go unnoticed by everyone on this board.  Mattress Mac gave one million dollars to the program back then and we nearly fell out of our chairs.  He subsequently made our practice field a source of amusement for many by forcing the AD to name it after a coach we fired.

And to this day, I wish that he would have asked that the practice fields be named for Andrew Smith.

But... that's Mattress Mac.

      It usually works that way. Lose to good teams and beat bad ones. I hope you stick with the team, but if it is too much torture, be like many others and give up. As a long mostly suffering fan, over fifty years, NT is my team. I didn't go to UT or A&M and couldn't care less about them and other the perennial powers. As far as your coach record comparison, Dodge was a bargain basement hire and didn't have a chance. McCarney was the first football hc that was hired with a competitive compensation package. Unfortunately, he had serious health issues and was a failure. Littrell and Morris were upgrades but certainly not proven D1 hc winners. I have not entirely given up on Morris, although the last game was a horrible coaching job. The defensive coordinator basically was fired by his defensive players. They are either/and/or not very talented or were poorly coached. Ether way the Defensive Coordinator is responsible. NT has two very winnable games left. Two wins and a good showing in any bowl would make this year at least a limited success.

      2025 DC Wish List

      We will need to connect some dots for a potential new DC hire (assuming the interim doesn't get it). First, Caponi had no apparent Texas connections. He was a career defensive asst position coach at several schools, and lastly a CB coach at Iowa State, before being elevated to DC at UNT. He did have some DC time at a Dlll school in 2008-10, but nothing since. Was he elevated too fast? https://meangreensports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/matt-caponi/731 Does Morris have a short-list already? Probably. It's not like everyone didn't know there needed to be a change in DC for some time coming. Here are some starting criteria: -The new DC "should" have previous FCS or FBS DC experience...so a repeat learning-curve doesn't happen. -Texas ties for recruiting would be bonus points. -For a quick hire, I expect it to be someone Morris is already familiar with, no interview needed, only $ negotiated. -Are 2-year contracts a thing for Coordinators in FBS? If not, One-year only please, until we establish confidence. So, with all that in mind: -Find some FCS DCs that Morris worked with somewhere else. -A DC on an FBS staff where the HC has already been fired, or soon will be, but they had a good Defense! (a new HC will bring his own staff in). -A former head coach that has been recently recycled back thru DC to try again.
