So you legitimately are stupid enough to believe that Dodge would've won with that team? An offensive minded coach would've put that defense heavy team in the best position to win is what you're saying. Dodge would've won 9 games, more than his entire W total at North Texas, is what you're saying. Dodge would've been able to bring in a defensive wizard like Skladany is what you're saying. If Dodge wasn't a moron maybe we'd have had 90's love interest for another year and maybe had another good year.

Shit on McCarney all you want, the guy was pretty invested his first three years and put the players in the best position to win, something Dodge couldn't do. In addition, his strength coach built those players up into their potential.

You have an astonishing lack of knowledge about football. His borderline criminal dereliction of duties was horrible and ruined his legacy...but be real about 2013.

plz don't threaten to beat me up

I will not threaten to beat you up. Do I need to go get Facebook history and post it on here of you acting like a maniac?

We had the 2nd easiest schedule in the last 20 years of North Texas football and managed 8 regular season wins. We lost to Tulane and nutsack that year. Could have easily lost vs 4-8 La Tech. The team had to play like God's in the 2nd half to squeak one out against Ball St. The Rice game could have went either way. Lost to a 6 loss Ohio team. We were 4 or 5 momentum swinging plays away from being 4-8. Dan McCarney did not put this team in position to win jack shit. If anything, that 2013 overcame stupidity to a 9-4 season. I give John Skladany and the recruiting efforts of Todd Dodge and Co. way more credit for the 2013 season than I would ever give Dan McCarney.

There is a saying in high school football that what works on Thursday night (jv games) doesn't work on Friday night (varsity games).   You could also say that what works on Friday night does not work on Saturday night.    Todd Dodge thought that he could bring his high school schemes and coaches to the college level and be successful.   Well, we all know how that turned out don't we ?

In fact, some of the opposing teams laughed at how it was so easy to play against our defense....which was elementary at best.

Way off bro.  I actually made almost all home and away games and our team was salty. We got some teams at the right time but we still went into Ruston and Hattiesburg and wiped the the floor with them.  They were not squeak by wins that team was the most legit squad I have witnessed in my 29 years of following them.  Oh yeah we also sucker punched our presidents school for the fun of it in a New Year's Day bowl game in the Cotton Bowl.

flukes like that don't just occur without some luck strength will and motivation.  Long live that great team.  Littrell will bring us our next WOW!

... but the guy can coach.

I'm glad he's doing well at high school again, but it doesn't mean he was ever cut out to be a college coach. Even if you factor in that UNT was resource and facility poor during his time in Denton, 6-37 is a staggeringly bad record.

Carroll's record the last 20 seasons is 244–39–1.  Plus they had at least 3 state titles before Dodge.

And one after. Dodge has never shown that he's a mechanic. He's merely shown that he can put a Ferrari into cruise control when handed the keys. But only in a wealthy school zone, never on the FBS freeway.

I think you're trying way too hard to dismiss the achievement of winning a high school football title in Texas. Having all the advantages of a district like Southlake Carroll also brings a lot of expectations and pressure. There also are opponents with just as many advantages. Dodge flourished there and deserves credit for what he achieved.

Yep. It was the OU staff that were laughing at our high school schemes. Let that sink in. They were literally laughing out loud in the booth at us. They could have beaten is 100-0 if they wanted to. Dodge could recruit but couldn't do anything else even competently.

I traveled to Ruston in 2013. We did not wipe the floor with them by any means. Ball St was exactly a squeak out win. We needed a 20 something yard TD scramble by Derek Thompson. Shouldn't have lost to Ohio, nutsack or Tulane that year. Could have easily lost to both Rice, La Tech, and Ball State that year.

I told him to back up his shit talking and he got mad. It's not nearly that interesting.

Yeah, OK. I'll save you the embarrassment.

Freshmen and sophomores don't win big games or bowl games. They had to materialize within the program before that took place. Once it did they were able to put together a nice season. Nothing McCarney did brought success to that season. That man was a hindrance.

psh. We are't talkin' basketball.

that's ok. I was just disproving your statement. Freshman can win and compete in big games.

Every 8-4 team is 4 or 5 momentum swinging plays away from being 4-8. That's football.

Negative. If basketball games wre played in 12 games seasons you could say that. Not really football. Look at our Wins that year. That was like 20 momentum plays a game.

Nick Saban must be a subpar coach.  His 15-17 record with the Dolphins, a subpar NFL team.  He only had National Championships at LSU and Bama......

Yeah great comparison if you leave out Saban's time at MSU that earned him the opportunity at LSU.

When Saban arrived in East Lansing, Michigan prior to the 1995 season, MSU had not had a winning season since 1990, and the team was sanctioned by the NCAA for recruiting violations committed under his predecessor and former mentor,

Dodge is not a great coach.  Why we are even discussing this now that we are on the 2nd permanent head coach since his departure?  If this isn't going to help us get recruits from Austin Westlake what is the point?  Are we hoping have UNT beat Allen HS next year?  SMH

Nick Saban went 6-6, 7-5, 6-6, and 9-2 at MSU. Hardly commendable. MSU is 558-358 as a program. They win up there. Not at an ultra high level, but win nevertheless.

And McCarney did something Dodge could only dream of. Win 9 games, much less in one season. Oh, and a mid-tier bowl W.

Our bowl was bottom level. Some sites even ranked it the worst bowl of the season. Just because it was on New Year's Day doesn't mean anything.

Technically the bowl is a mid-level bowl given the P5 tie-in. However, since we were snubbed with UNLV (and UNLV snubbed with us; bc we are both perceived as hot garbage) it ended up being a bottom level bowl in practicality.

He did something that McCarney could only dream of. Recruit at an average level.

Yea, #1 and #7 on our all-time scoring leaders list; #1 and #8 on our all-time rushing yardage leaders list; #2, #6, and #9 on our all-time passing yardage leaders list; #10 on our all-time receiving yardage leaders list; #3, #6, an #8 on our all-time total offense yardage leaders list; #1 and #2 on our all-time all-purpose yardage leaders list.

Not bad for a bunch of average players. Guess throughout our history we haven't had many rise to the level of average.

6-37.

He did bring positives, but he tanked us at a time we MIGHT have been able to reclaim the momentum we had from the Dickey bowl years, remember he was hired less than 2 years after out 4 year run of bowl games.  All of that momentum got completely and utterly wiped out under his tenure.

I think that is why so many hold a grudge.  He tried his best, so did Mac, but coaches get paid to win games.

That momentum was long gone when Dickey was fired.

In 2005, our momentum led to a 2-9 record (2-5 in conference), good for worst in the conference (tie with FAU) while scoring 14.3 points per game and  giving up 31.5 points per game.

In 2006, our momentum led to a 3-9 record (2-5 in conference), good for second worst in the conference behind winless FIU(It took 7 overtimes for us not to lose to them), while scoring 12.8 points per game and giving up 25.3 points per game.

We were just about unwatchable in '05-'06 and it all started with Tulsa blowing our doors off 50-2 in our home opener in '05. If you truly believe we had momentum when Dodge got here, you're not being honest with yourself about the history of this program. Dodge was a gamble that ultimately failed but it was a risk worth taking because it brought people back out to watch the team because it brought excitement regardless of how excruciatingly painful that excitement was at times. Dickey's '05-'06 teams brought the excitement level of watching a car rust.
