Fourth (or fifth) largest University in the state of Texas and nationally we are still thought of as "minnows".  The BOR and Smatresk might want to address that issue.  You know, "the window through which the nation views UNT.

UNT’s four-year run as Sun Belt Conference football champs from 2001-04, its 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl win, its two NCAA tournament appearances under Johnny Jones and four trips to the NCAA women’s soccer tournament under John Hedlund all came in Villarreal’s time.

Vito went too easy on RV in his summary of his AD career.

He shouldn't credit RV with the 2001-04 Sun Belt run. Dickey was hired three years before he became AD.

He also shouldn't just fault RV for Dodge, Stephens and Peterson. UNT is 35-85 in football from 2004-14, a 29% winning percentage that is the seventh worst in all of the FBS. It'll be even worse when this year's record is added. It makes no sense that the AD is still in place with a record like that. We're still being called a minnow because of how our football and basketball teams have performed during RV's tenure. The facilities improvements will never help our reputation until they produce winners.

Who do we have to thank for being called minnows by ESPN? Ahhh, yes, that's right...Thanks, RV. @flyonthewall - This is the vision you are supporting. Read this article and think about where we sit and how we are perceived and just know that the man that you blindly support is the man that has given us our modern day college football reputation. It doesn't matter what he envisions and what we tells you and your buddies what he wants to do moving forward. What matters are the results of said vision and the results speak for itself.

This is not just RV to be honest, his staff has been horrible about correcting facts of UNT, but the UNT administration as a whole has been a joke, this is more thanks Lee "SMU" Jackson and the 50% non-UNT Alum BOR.

The whole thing needs to be cleaned out to be honest. We need far more green blood within the AD.

....and all during that run Dickey and RV hardly spoke, because RV was looking for any excuse to fire him.

When you look at it in that light, DD's conference run and bowl trips are even more amazing.

AND every time they credit RV with the stadium I will always counter with SGA and the student vote.......which RV is not responsible for.......except to finally stay the hell away from it.

MGB: ESPN story on influence of banners in world of sports mentions "minnows such as North Texas"

http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2015/12/fire-rick-villarreal-banner-mentioned-in-espn-com-story.html/

I think RV must have promised you a parking pass.

You know it's "more than just a few" who feel this way. And the reason it was only a few who contributed is because the account made its goal in a little over 24 hours.

There are also several innaccuracies in that blog entry that others have already covered.

This was the purpose of the banner. Put a spotlight on RV and his performance record. Probably the most effective use of $1900 in the past 15 years as related to UNT athletics...

RV is responsible for his staff. Leadership is everything.

I'm so freaking tired of the way this program is thought of. So damn tired. Especially from a place like Miami which has 20 years of relevance; other than that, pretty much a minnow as well. Ugh. Fourth largest school in the state. 25th(?) in the country.

Littrell needs to fix it.

Littrell isn't the AD. Only a new AD can "fix it."

Do even half of the BOR members know what ESPN even is, much less why we would be mentioned by them? I seriously have my doubts. These people loathe sports.

Not his job.

And yet RV is the head of that body. If an appendage doesn't do its job, you replace it. And if after multiple replacements -or- the head is unwilling, then...

Don't let Brint Ryan hear you, he uh, definitely likes his sports.

I see Vito still doesn't think Mac was a bad hire...smh

Vito is fishing for good graces. Must be.

I don't see how any one person can say that Dan McCarney was even remotely close to being a good hire. He drowned this program in his laziness and old age. We are college football bottom feeders thanks to Dan McCarney and Ricky V.

His job is to win games. If we win games we wouldn't be perceived this way. If Littrell wins games, we won't be seen this way. Don't really get your point.

Yes, we will. Basketball is still a mess. People inside college athletics know what a joke this AD is. Until that is changed, we will always be seen as a joke.

I imagine there were many a chuckle inside other CUSA athletic department after RV's 15 minute... Speech?... To introduce Littrell.

Yeah, I agree 100%. He seemingly tried to steal the spotlight and put it on himself so he could pat himself on the back because he knows the amount of scrutiny he's under. He did the same thing at the meet and greet. Dude is a dead piece of flesh that need to be scissored off. But...but...vision. Vision doesn't mean jack until it comes to fruition. Nothing is coming to fruition. We are nobodies. People can try and point blame at the BOR, but they are just completed signing off on the highest paid assistant salary pool in the conference as well as the highest paid (and youngest) head coach in the conference. In my mind, we are being hindered by RV's laziness in marketing and donating efforts. And, of course, hiring quality head coaches. Those are the 3 things that is in dire straits here at North Texas and the new AD (or RV) must put their undivided attention towards.
