I wouldn't normally post this here, but since you have so many other coaching topics, I thought I'd add one.

Herman signed a new contract with UH today

Highlights from the contract

  • $2.8 million annually
  • Additional $200k to assistant salary pool
  • $2.5 million buyout before 2/2017
  • Reduced buyout if indoor practice facility not approved by 9/2016, at or near completion by 12/2017, moved in by 12/2018
  • $5 million bonus if UH becomes member of a conference w/annual TV revenue >=$20 million per member while he's coach

As someone that keeps a close eye on UH I am happy for them and jealous of the donors they have that make all of this possible.   I will say I think this contract comes with more risk than people want to realize as a head coach must be good at two things;  coaching and recruiting.  While it appears he is good at both he has yet to show he can win with his players.  Still, all things considered, I have to think it was the right call.

Very true, but he's proven that he can with with the same players that the prior coach couldn't win with.  That means he's better at talent development than the prior staff.

Good for him and hopefully good for UH

The issue with a deal like this is that it really puts all the risk on UH side at this point. At least they get a bigger buyout, but it is unlikely that Herman was going to leave for a "lesser" job anyways where be buyout language would be prohibitive. The worst case scenario for UH is that he craters and they are paying him like a P5 coach. Worst case for Herman is that he didn't get a raise and this could have been used against him in recruiting.

Keeps the seat warm for him in case UT fires Strong next year but also provides him some protection from some of the lower-end school rumors to protect recruiting. Now all he has to do is win next year like he did this year to live up to the deal.

I haven't seen it in several years, but what is wrong with your current indoor facility?

First, I think it's funny that Cougar King can't spell "yes."  Unless on some planet "Yasss..." is a word.

Good for Coach Herman.  But I find it odd that if the indoor facility is NOT built, the buyout decreases.  It seems to me that the incentive to build the indoor facility would be tied to Herman's performance.

"If we don't build an indoor facility, that I assume Herman wants, it will cost us less to buy you out."  Right ?

'splain this to me Lucy.

It's a multipurpose facility that's not ideal for football.  The Olympic sports are getting great use out of it, but not so much for football.  Seems wasteful I know, but it's what's going on in the facilities arms race.  Lots of football only weight rooms being built now too.

Just Herman insuring that he gives himself the best chance to win at UH.  If the school doesn't do what it needs to do for Herman to be successful, he can walk more easily.  It shows that both parties are committed to improvement instead of the status quo.

Houston is throwing 60 million at a new bball arena. Make that 80 million when you add in the 20 million dollar gift.

They just built a new football stadium. They are paying their football coach more than any other G5 team. Their staff is also the highest paid in G5.

Sounds like they are positioning themselves for a chance at the BigXII

They're certainly all-in.   But Texas controls their fate.  If Texas wants them in, they'll get in.  If Texas wants them left out, it doesn't matter how much they throw at their programs, they're not getting in.

Their money is small-time according to the SEC, and A&M would try their hardest to make sure they don't get in.

ACC or Pac-12 trying to make a play in Texas would be the only feasible way they get into a P5.
