I want to see that coach who looks at the previous 21 years of suck around here and decides, "Yeah, I'll go there for a three-year contract." If you find that coach, I'd be the first to tell him that he was a colossal dumbass for accepting that deal.

See,...your not thinking in terms of what's best for North Texas.

Who here gives a rat's if said coach looks like a colossal dumbass or not. We're one of only 128 employers doling out a possible annual 7 figure salary.  If he won't take $1,400,000 under our terms he can pound sand.  For accepting that deal...possibly in year three he could just as easily go into College Station, destroy the Aggies and win a C-USA Championship and a bowl game and be staring at a $2-$4 Million deal from Texas...or from whoever?   It could happen after year 1 or 2.  And if he's hired away there's a nice buyout for North Texas...plus said school should agree to a home and home.

He comes to work for us under our terms with the opportunity to hit pay dirt...or not.  He can take it or leave it.

What's to stop a coach from putting more of his eggs into the JUCO transfer basket versus the high school recruit basket if we're gonna just give out a 3-year deal?  He's gonna be under some huge pressure for immediate results thus high might not want to wait to see if those incoming freshmen pan out or not come their third year.

Interim or not doesn't matter.  The narrative we've been getting sold around here for years is that no coach worth his salt would come here for less than 5 years because he/she won't be able to recruit well because it is believed that recruits just won't want to play for a coach that isn't under a guarantee thru his/her time here.

That's a rediculous assumption.  And now we know that in the past two or three days...at least 2 major programs..possibly 3... don't believe that is a factor at all since their interims-to-permanent coaches are only going to be around for the next 3 years or less.

I wish that was realistic, but I just don't think it is with our current situation. Maybe before, with the proper leadership, it could've been, but not now.

Hopefully, those UNT 17 donors will continue to pony up and pay the buyouts when the next RV hires flame out again...but that hits on the bigger problem, doesn't it?

The only way I would accept the UNT job would be for $1.5 million per year with 5 year guarantee.North Texas has had losing seasons 10 of past 11 years,is worst team in Division 1A, and the cupboard is bare. I would tell UNT to take it or leave it.

If any coach of ours goes into ATM and wins while winning CUSA in the same year we better be the ones negotiating a better deal.

A competant AD that explains it up front that he will be expected to develope with mostly HS talent.  And if he does and succeeds he will be rewarded accordingly, either thru being hired away or thru incentives.

If your looking for your first head coaching job you shouldn't be making the demands, and any competant AD would make this very clear upfront.

Rick,

How many of those new hires receiving less than 5 year contracts are not interim coaches being made "permanent"?  I really think the whole thing is perceived market value of a candidate.  Also, how about hiring someone we expect to get hired away from us, and not having a reasonable buyout clause?  I think one of the real goof ups was the amount of buyout for Karen Aston.

What message does that send to a candidate? Basically, I am going to offer you a below market deal based entirely on the idea that you are extremely likely to fail and I don't want it to cost me a bunch of money when you do. Sounds like a method to get the best candidate for the job.

None - but of course the retort is that it doesn't matter, when it definitely does. It's very hard to convince someone to leave a job they are very comfortable with without the added security - it's very different if you are already there doing the job and more than likely had no other reasonable shot for a similar job.

It's very hard?  It's one of only 128 opportunities available in the nation that pays between $285k to $5 Million a year.  I'd say one of 128 jobs that pays an average of a million dollars plus a year buys a guy lot of damn security.

Coach Mac had I think 2.5 years left on his contract and got canned.  He was still fired despite all of this "job security."
