During the broadcast of the game (FSSW) with 7:58 left in the 3rd Qtr, they did a segment on Joe Greene. Here is their statement "well they are the Mean Green", and it's all because of this guy "Mean Joe Greene".

FALSE, FALSE, FALSE

Once again, the ineptness of our athletic department, in particular the Sports Information (?) Department strikes again.

Is it just pure ignorance?

Is it laziness on the part of the SID?

Or perhaps good ol' male sports dominated misogyny because a woman coined the phrase and gave us the nick name?

Perhaps I'm in the minority but this is what we were in for when the name changed from Eagles to Mean Green officially in 2002 or whenever that was.  We should have officially remained the North Texas Eagles with Mean Green being an additional nickname but that's just my opinion and I'm probably in the very very small minority at this point.

I sent a tweet to Eric Capper asking why we continuously let this happen during TV broadcasts, but of course, no response was given. Which is strange since earlier this week Capper said part of his job was to stop people from spreading lies about the Mean Green.

The only time I've seen the story told correctly was The NFL Network's A Football Life on Joe Greene.

If this board put half as much energy into pushing our football program to be better as we do in complaining about the story of how we got the name Mean Green, NTSU vs UNT or what school colors our former QB is wearing, we might actually make some progress some day.

Wait, what?

Almost all the talk here is about what's wrong and how to make it better... You're preaching to the choir if you think there is anyone out there who will push this football program more than the diehards on this board.

Agree.  Also, Monday Night Football had excellent coverage about Joe and how unknown he was when Pittsburgh drafted him....the night the Steelers retired his jersey.  They showed newspaper clips the next day following the draft naming him as Joe Greene without a single reference to being known as Mean Joe Greene.  Here he was simply known as Big Joe.

This entire issue with North Texas is one of effort...or a lack of.  It's been addressed time and again with RV and staff by me and others but we have received nothing but excuses.

Since their name changes I've not once heard or seen Texas State or Memphis referred to with their previous names by the media.  One would think North Texas could at least get the media to give us the same consideration.

Our mascot has never changed.  We simply adopted Mean Green as an official moniker.  We are, in full name, the North Texas Mean Green Eagles.

Official Mascot: Eagles
Official Moniker: Mean Green

Alabama is a great parallel for understanding this.  Most know them as The Crimson Tide.  That is their official moniker.  They have (officially) been the elephants (mascot) since 1979, and remain so.

That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your point.  Just clarifying that we are still the Eagles.

I'm sorry, but we are the North Texas Mean Green. No Eagles.

Agree I was speaking in terms of the moniker.  I'd always known us as the North Texas Eagles and changing that was a mistake IMO.  We still could have been the Mean Green as an official/unofficial moniker but you know what I'm saying.

If the prevailing moniker is Mean Green, it would behove the teams to perform like mean green....saw an opponent spirit sign once that said demean the green...thought it was pretty catchy.

I think one reason the story about the Mean Green's conception continues to not be corrected is because the false story sounds better and cooler than the actual story.

A fan or casual watcher probably considers that to be pretty awesome to be named after Mean Joe Greene -- even if it is false.

But, some responsibility also lies with the announcers and the producer for not fact checking enough. If you're going to have a graphic explaining the nickname, you'd figure you would have done a bit of thorough research.

So is the official story we just decided to change our name to the Mean Green in the 2000s? I always get this wrong when talking to others.

Texas A&M are the Aggies.  Their mascot is a Collie named Reville.

I have never once heard someone refer to Texas A&M as the Texas A&M Collies.

NorthTexas is the Mean Green.  Our mascot is an Eagle named Scrappy.

I just don't know why this is so hard for some.

And he Mean Joe Green story sticks.  Marketing 101 keep it simple for the low information broadcasters.  Then do trivia on it like this:

is it smokey bear or smokey the bear...

This is more about the moniker not the mascot.  We were officially the North Texas Eagles with the Eagle being our mascot until it was changed.  Now our mascot is still the Eagle but we are not called the North Texas Eagles we are called the North Texas Mean Green.  Texas A&M has always been the Aggies from what I recall at least...never been the Collies or what not.

Our mascot has never changed.  We are the Eagles.  Our nickname or moniker is The Mean Green...which comes from our defense of the 60's.

It's quite simple.

Right I meant our mascot has never changed.  Yes we've had the Mean Green moniker around since the 60's or what not but we were always the North Texas Eagles with Eagles being the official nickname/moniker until that was changed.

We are still the eagles, our spirit is mean green. Those eagles you see on the side of the helmets are not little scrappys

We can be the Mean Green Eagles if it makes everyone happy.

A single player would be an eagle a team of North Texas eagles  is MEAN GREEN.

Around here being in the minority is a point of pride.  It means you're among those who know what the F you're talking about.

I guess I missed the official announcement? Was there a vote or something?

Or when RV had it put on the web? Kind of like the story of the Mean Green?

Does simply posting it to the web make it official or true?
