SMU coaching hire not looking too great at this point.

They were in our position exactly one year ago as far as the state of their football team. They hired a pretty successful P5 OC that was lauded as a good hire.  They are in the midst of a 2-10 season barring the greatest comeback in modern sports history. Just so everyone taps the breaks a little because our rebuild could take 2-3 years to get to where we want to be.

The flaw in your logic is that they could be 2-10 because they're terrible, not because they're rebuilding.

I get tired of the "we're rebuilding" rationalization for a new coach doing poorly out of the gate. CUSA is not a conference that should take 3 years to be competitive in.

Meanwhile, during VA Tech's game, they report that the Memphis HC will take over for Beamer. While Memphis is playing. So, they can hire their new HC while he is coaching his final game with the bowl game still to play, yet, we have to wait.

i agree it wont happen over night.. but Littrell and Meachum have more experience and better resume than chad morris

Ok, let me rephrase it. We are a terrible football team. We are very very bad. We aren't just a player or two away from being a title contender. We have a couple of good running backs and a couple of decent safeties. Regardless of the conference we are in or the coach it will take time to be a good football team. Anyone who expects us to be right back in the thick of things next season hasn't been paying attention for the last decade.

Yes it could take 2 or 3 years, or a lot worse never happen.  However, I do expect the team to be significantly better next year and there is absolutely no reason that NT can't build a very successful program.  The right hire makes it happen and the wrong hire which is a lot easier to do and NT will be doing this again in about 4 years.

      Is the Portal out of control?

      Come on man, it was no different before. A player at school X usually could not care less about X until they signed to play there. A lot of students didn't care about X until they enrolled, too. And when they didn't like the classes/social scene/town/it was too hard/etc they cared about school Y they moved to not school X anymore.

      I have no problem with the assistants. OK, with Cassity sticking by his guys, I hope it doesn't take too much time away from his Portal recruiting.

      While a lot of what you said is true, I'm not convinced about winning over the alumni. Most were never interested in FB, or were fans of bigger schools, and many of the few that were have been lured away by the ESPN Minor League CFB system. We let 30-40+ years of students roll through UNT w/o much of a FB program to embrace. Worse yet, we spent a good portion of that time being a commuter school that was also significantly populated with students majoring in art, music, and elementary school teachers. While there are exceptions, a large majority of those students aren't interested in FB. It's interesting that art and music majors aren't in the below, but maybe many of them never complete their degree or end up with a teaching degree focused in that specialty. I'm kinda' surprised at the legal numbers. Now that we're well over 40k, we're less of a commuter school and the number of students interested in athletics should be getting a larger. However, even if 20k of those were FB fans, as I mentioned above, many of those are T-shirt fans of other big name schools. They'd rather watch SEC FB on a big screen TV in their comfy room with cheap snacks and beer than personally attend a UNT game.
