Is it possible for the new HC to purge the roster of walk ons except the ones he wants to keep? Good lord seems like 1/3 or more of our team is freaking walk ons. Thanks for building us into an even "slower smaller" team Dan.

If they're already on scholarship, probably not. If they aren't on scholarship there's no need to get rid of walkons. Just sign a bunch of legitimate FBS recruits who actually have a good amount of other offers and those players will be the ones on the field in short time.

I admire walk-ons, thank them sincerely and support their efforts. They have tremendous work ethic and desire to play D1 ball. And we need them. We need them because the recruiters have not kept the pantry stocked with talent and have forced us to grow our own talent to fill out the roster. I hope there is always a walk-on path to the team but it wouldn't hurt if it was less traveled. I defer to others to answer the question about whether or not those scholarships are annually renewable because I don't know. I would hate to see a kid lose a scholarship he earned the hard way.

One thing I noticed when Coach Mac was fired was how many players mentioned how grateful they were to coach Mac for taking a chance on them because Mac was their only offer.

While the sentiments were nice, it did tell me that we had a problem of getting players that no one else wanted. Which may have been a factor in the results (I am trying to be nice here).

I look forward to an overhaul of this team to get us back on track...

Who is not on scholarship now that any of us think should be?  I don't know whether Tre Johnson, the return man who came on nicely in the second half of the season is on scholarship or not, but if he isn't, he should be, IMHO.

I am taking the route less traveled, I am talking kids who are on Scholly, more or less wasting one.  While I understand walk ons are a big part of a program.  To use a scholarship or 15-20 (small side) for Mac, are we really getting most out of our money? Aren't all D1 football scholy's one year?  I know it may seem bad for business but lets get kids in here who can play dad gum I am tired of being so much SMALLER and SLOWER than the teams we play.  Anyone else?

Weird, a lot of people were talking about how NT finally looks like a college team with McCarney recruiting and conditioning program; a couple of years ago.  Now, that has morphed into not fast or strong enough.

Not sure why anyone is worried about the walk-ons, they are ether contributing and on scholarship or playing without financial aid.   The walk-ons are not the problem, it is the players recruited with a ship that can't beat them out.

I think the whole thing is a mess.  I don't disagree, but having 20+ walk ons on scholarship is RIDICULOUS.  Those are ships you can use to recruit an athlete who has 3-6 other offers from other D1 schools (who evaluated the kid as a D1 player)

Only if you can recruit players with multiple offers.  It should have been obvious that the high number of walk-ons to scholarship players was a strong indication that recruiting was very weak.  However, it was a lot better to have no-offer players competing for a ship than using it to recruit a high school player with approximately the same talent.

Or maybe there is a reason the recruited players can't beat out the walkons. Ever think about that? Talent evaluation and recruiting efforts would be a great place to start.

i think you missed the point. These walk ons are not taking scholarship slots from potential recruits. The scholarships are available because we have so many open slot because the recruited players did not pan out and left the program. You can only offer so many each year so you either put a few walk ons on scholarship each year or do nothing with the open scholarship. Why not reward a few each year that earned it.

The other problem is having so many recruited scholarship players that can't beat out these walk ons for starting spots.

Scholarships are a year to year thing. Coaches can pull scholarships after the year is up but usually don't if it is only based on on-field performance. A new coach that comes in and starts pulling ships will piss off the high school coaches that he has to rely on for recruiting help. The new coach is going to need all the good will he can muster with a short recruiting season and purging the roster is not the way to go.

1. Even if we purged the roster of scholarship walkons, we could still only sign 25 this class. We will get to sign 25, and we're set to have about 26 scholarship seniors next season, so the new coach will get to sign a full 25 in each of his first two classes without getting rid of any of the scholarship walkons.

2. By my count we have 12 players who came to this program as walkons and are currently on scholarship (Ced Fernandes, Daniel Khan, Andy Flusche, Kaydon Kirby, Garrett Gunter, Tony Johnson, Blake Macek, Eric Keena, Kenny Buyers, Blake Bean, Michael Banogu, Jarrod Lynn). Of those 12, 3 of those guys will be gone when the clock hits 0:00 on Saturday, so that'll leave 9 walkons on scholarship inherited by the new coach.

3. Of those 9, 6 will be seniors next season in the new coaches first year, while Andy Flusche will be a junior and Ced Fernandes and Daniel Khan will be a redshirt sophomores. These players are not going to be taking up many spots on this roster for very long, and they won't prohibit the new coach from signing full classes.

4. There's only so much the new coach can do to make us good in year 1. Getting rid of these guys while still not being able to sign more players as a result won't do us any good. By year 2, year 3, and on you'll see the guys on the field will be mainly signees by the new coach, as well as some good scholarship signees from the 2014 and 2015 class like Tee Goree, Chris Miles, Jeff Wilson, Rod Young, etc. If the new coach takes care of recruiting we won't have to worry about seeing non-CUSA caliber players playing crucial snaps for us. Just gonna take some time. Unless it's a bad hire. Then it'll take a real long time.

Billy, always there to bring me back off the ledge. Of the guys you listed, except Johnson I am ok with their contributions. I really hope Khan and Fernandes stay, I liked what both guys showed in the spring. Anyway Buyers doesn't get an extra year? Also, you going to Martin game tomorrow? I'm going for both games hit me up if you wanna meet up.

Yeah, last I checked Johnson got beat out by my old teammate Trey Enterline. Yes, Buyers will be back. The three gone will be Banogu, Bean and Lynn. Buyers will be back. Unfortunately I'll be in Austin. Let me know what you think. Martin's OC Chad Rives had done an amazing job and needs a HC job. Probably my favorite coach ever. Hope they pull it off.

if there is a year I think this is it. Allen's defense isn't what it normally is, and neither is their offense. I'm calling a Martin win by 10. You know coach will try 3 fakes on special teams, and go for it at LEAST 3-5 times on 4th down.

The sky isn't falling.

It fell and is lying in piece on the ground.
