We Were Soldiers

This doesn't have much to do with sports, and that's why it is on the general board. But I just saw We Were Soldiers starring Mel Gibson, and I thought I would share. It isn't like The Patriot or Braveheart, where you come away pumped up and talking about how much bohiney Gibson kicked. This movie is a lot like Saving Private Ryan in the way it depicts war realistically, or as realistically as I could imagine. I just came away with so much more respect for all the veterans and those who lost thier life in the Vietman war, and all other wars, as well as the families involved. I now want to see the Vietnam memorial as soon as I can. I highly recommend to go to Blockbuster and check this out.

Being a Viet Nam Veteran ('70-'71), I will probably see this movie too. I view VN war movies to see how close they are to the real thing. So far, one of the best is Platoon. If you want to get an idea of what it was like being a Grunt(Infantry Foot Soldier) in Viet Nam, I highly recommend Platoon. Very, very realistic.

DeepGreen,

A belated, but well deserved thank you to you and all of the other men and women that served in Vietnam and the other wars. Your service to your country is to be comended. I personally never wanted to serve, but had the chance to visit Washington D.C. and Arlington National Cemetary about 5 or 6 years ago. From that day forward I regretted not serving. Again, thanks for your service, and thank God you came home alive.

DeepGreen, thanks from me also. I watched We Were Soldiers on Monday night. I was very impressed. My wife was telling me that the guys who wrote the book did so because they were tired of Viet Nam movies making it out to be a big party.

Platoon was a great movie. Did you see Hamburger Hill? I’ve heard some veterans say it was fairly realistic.

Thanks again!

Nice post IronMan.

A friend of mine who was in the Marine artillery in Viet Nam, voted for "Full Metal Jacket" as the most realistic depiction of Marine boot camp. He thought that the depiction of the actual war in Full Metal Jacket was pretty accurate, but Platoon was just a little better.

If you want to see Mel Gibson in a completely different role, I highly recommend "Signs". wink.gif
