I know some Iowa State fans have hearts set on Tom Herman, but that's not happening. He just re-upped at Houston, and when he goes somewhere else, it's going to be to a school with much more football cache than Iowa State.

That would be a great hire, Pollard's third head football coach in his 10-plus years as the athletics director, but it ain't happening.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo would be an interesting choice; he's making $1.6 million, according to the USA Today coaches salary databasae. Someone emailed me his name, but that seems unrealistic as well.

I'm sticking with my first impression -- Briles or Riley.

Pay them the average Big 12 salary. Give them whatever it takes to recruit the state of Texas, and then just hope one of them stays longer than Gene Chizik.

Going to Iowa St. as a hot, young assistant kinda worked out for Gene Chizik.  He had one horrible season and I think upset a lot of ISU fans but turned that into the Auburn job.

Iowa State is a graveyard for coaches at the P5 level. Your talent pool is very small, basketball is the #1 sport on campus, your in-state rival gets the lion's share of decent recruits in the state, you play in a league where certain teams have access to more talent in one class than you will ever have on your whole team, and finally, the one public school in the P5s that is most likely to get left behind when the Big XII falls apart at some point before 2025 resides in Ames, Iowa.

Nobody on the list that they had in the Ames newspaper will go there, not Briles, not Riley, not Meacham, not Cumbie. And the Navy coach isn't going there, either. Their best bet is to get one of the MAC school's head coach to go there, someone who knows the lay of the land up there, someone like Babers, or the head coach at NDSU, who would probably like a raise from FCS to P5...

Not a good landing spot for an up and coming coach. It's a lot easier to turn around a UNT than it is Iowa State.

That's exactly right.  Iowa State is a much tougher gig than UNT all in all.  They might be able to afford to pay their coaches a little more, however, given their share of the Big 12 pot.  Plus no one really wants to live in Ames.
