Major, major coaching news in Division II broke over the past two days – we’re talking top-story-on-SportsCenter type news if this was FBS – with West Alabama head coach Will Hall departing for the same position at Gulf South Conference bunkmate West Georgia.

Hall replaces five-year West Georgia head coach Daryl Dickey, who moves up one spot on the totem pole to athletics director. And Dickey’s first move as AD was a hit. 

The 2003 winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy – Division II’s version of the Heisman –  at West Alabama, Hall immediately jumped into coaching, spending a year at Presbyterian and Henderson State before earning his first offensive coordinator gig at Southwest Baptist in 2006. He returned to his alma mater in 2008 – his fifth job in five years – as offensive coordinator and was promoted to head coach following the 2010 season. 

West Alabama reached the Division II playoffs in Hall’s first two seasons as head coach, and compiled a 25-11 record in his three seasons. Hall turned the Tigers into an offensive juggernaut during his tenure; West Alabama ranked eighth or higher nationally in six offensive categories this season and topped the 42 points eight times in 11 games this season. Fittingly, his final game at West Alabama will go down as a 91-28 romp over Central State, setting both school and Gulf South records for single-game points and touchdowns. 

Though West Alabama won a share of the Gulf South title for the second straight season, the Tigers were not chosen for a third consecutive playoff berth.

It is unclear at this time what prompted Hall’s move across state lines, but West Georgia’s more advanced facilities are believed to be a factor.

I like his record and his speaking but Colby Carthel has both of those and did it all in Texas at the same level for a greater length of time.
