The alarming part is that we weren't good in 2011 and 2012 and still drew 17-18k.

This year we will draw less than 14k. Some of this can be attributed to weather and crap ass scheduling by a terrible AD, but there is a percentage that left. That got tired of losing. That couldn't stomach a 59 point loss in a game scheduled by RV and made the homecoming game by RV (on Texas/OU weekend, none the less).

These people simply won't be back next year.

On the same note, we had UTEP, UTSA, and Rice at home in 2013 and perfect weather for every game except UTSA, when it was simply cool. And we were winning. UTEP brought a ton of fans.

This year we had those same teams and drew 10k for UTSA with good weather on Halloween (the one Saturday all fall when you don't want a 6pm start time). Rice was a good crowd early in the year. UTEP will bring no one and draw no one.

So this year, we played Rice at home in early September in the afternoon (Still hot), we played Portland State (FCS nobody on Homecoming afternoon of Texas/OU), we played Western Kentucky (on a Thursday night), we played UTSA (on Halloween NIGHT), and we play UTEP (on the Saturday after Thanksgiving). That list of games may look on par with most of the home schedules we have played in Denton for the last 20 years, but its the worst "scheduled" schedule we have ever been dealt. I guess that's more on CUSA than it is on RV, I suppose, but RV's job is to make CUSA leadership aware that gams on Texas/OU weekend, on Halloween night, and the Saturday after Thanksgiving will never draw well. And scheduling afternoon games in early September in Denton also isn't a real good idea, either. Maybe there is nothing that can be done about that timing of games, but it is without a doubt, one of the worst schedules I have ever seen. Bye week to start a season (WTF??), only OOC game is a FCS spare for the Pacific Northwest, a game on Halloween night, and a game at home on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Whoever you want to blame it on, the reality is it just plain sucked--which perfectly complimented the team we have rolled out this year.

The 4pm game time for Portland St. Is completely on RV. Texas/OU was just wrapping up as our game was starting.

There was no TV. There was no reason for that not to be a 6pm game.

Mindboggling.

Why are any conference games held against RV?  C-USA puts the conference slate together.  None of the AD's have a say.  They might put in requests, but I highly doubt the conference takes any of them into consideration.   Do you think any AD would say, "Please schedule a home game for us the weekend after Thanksgiving!"?

That is not 100 percent true, ADs do have a say in it.

When we only have 5 home games this is a bigger problem, the game after Thanksgiving should be avoided as much as possible but it is going to happen. Knowing it was in our season this year and having it be one of our 5 home games was a bigger problem and something RV could have done much better. We should have some 7 home game years.

Other than 2 more hours for people to get all nice and toasted in the parking lot, how does the difference between a 4 PM and 6 PM kickoff really affect people's decision to come to this particular match up?

You sure a bad UNT team wouldn't be enough?

We always have to find excuses why people don't want to come to our games.  Rangers in the World Series. Texas/OU weekend.  NASCAR.  Halloween. Kids' Soccer games.  It's always one excuse after another.  People will come or they won't.  Building up excuses around events you have absolutely no control over is wasting everyone's time.

Wow, from RV's mouth to your ears, eh?

Seriously, you just summed up this athletic department's marketing plan. You, like that plan, are completely wrong, of course, and a drop of attendance by a 1/4 will demonstrate such this year.

Just because there is a UNT football game doesn't mean people autimatically show up. There is a very good chance that point will be driven home the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Keep in mind we were 2-10 in 2007, 1-11 in 2008, and 2-10 in 2009 and still averaged just over 18k a game in 2009, despite a combined 5-31 record.

In a crap stadium

With pavement tailgaiting.

This year's attendance should scare the hell out of people like Fly.  Denial is truly the strongest human emotion.

No, from my own mouth.  You can't tell me it's NOT the truth.  Even you are in the process of lining up an excuse why people won't be at the game versus UTEP -- Weather.  Something NOONE has any control over.  Nevermind that we'll likely have a one win team to watch next Saturday, which will be a much bigger reason why people won't come.

What helped us stay in the 18k range between 2007 and 2009 was Todd Dodge.  He had a build in following and people still came to games because he was the coach and to a certain degree, the games were fun to watch.  Under McCarney, besides losing that built-in fanbase the games became quite predicable and not so much fun to watch, hence our slump in attendance.  We'll have a bump for a year or two with the new coach 'cause it will be the honeymoon period.  We'll see how attendance does in year three and four.  I bet it all comes down to one thing -- WINNING.

Marketing will help get the North Texas Football name out there but winning will be what ultimately gets people to come to games over and over.  Not RV. Not "The 17".  Not the BoR.

Why would the [lack of] attendance scare big donors? No really ... WHY?  Because somehow the "peasants" are revolting by not coming?

Look, the "Todd Dodge brought the Southlake people out" is crap. The biggest benefit of the Dodge hire was he turned some alumni's heads and got them back involved. One of them is typing right now. Unfortunately, he sucked. As one of the people that got re-involved, I'm now to the point of walking away.

As far as the exciting brand of football, if you consider bubble screens exciting, Dodge was your guy. Outside of a handful of games, the offense was fairly anemic.

So you think fun to watch losing is builds attendance? Here is some news for you. NOBODY LIKES WATCHING A CONSISTENT LOSER. NOBODY! It doesn't matter how you lose.

And yes, Fly and his friends should be concerned with falling attendance. Revenue will need to be made up. Fly and his friends will be asked to write bigger and bigger checks. At some point one would think the price of friendship and special privileges will become too high.

Meanwhile, enjoy an empty stadium on Saturday after thanksgiving.

Math was never my strength and I'm trying to disprove your statement.   What time does Jimmy John's close?   ...minus the estimated time the game would end...carry the one...??

I see what you did there...

But Jimmy John's delivers...

Mind blown?

Kid and I will be there, probably taking great advantage of the climate controlled viewing area and molesting the cheesecake.

A request to any AD people who may be reading this.  For the love of God, get some coffee in the club for this game.  Please.  It doesn't have to be free.  I'll pay for it.  Just make sure it's hot.

Edit:  Also, it is a mathematical certainty that we will have a home game the Saturday after Thanksgiving every other year.  Every team in college football does.  There is no avoiding it.  This is not a reason to whine.  It is not ammunition to use against the AD.  It always has been and always will be regardless of who's running the show, what conference we're in, what our record is, where Ray may be residing and what brand of dog food he prefers, the weather, the state of the middle east, the person residing in the oval office, the number of "tube" sites on the internet, or the fat to lean ratio of your preferred brisket.  There will ALWAYS be a home game the Saturday after Thanksgiving every other year.

Ditto on the coffee in the concession stands-no thanks on the hot chocolate.     Oh well, the flask comes in handy on cold game days.

Dessert menu for next Saturday:

Pies: pumpkin, pecan, coconut cream, and Dutch apple

warm cranberry pear gingerbread

chocolate silk pie

Buffet is prime rib, quiche lorain, and various sides (would have been chicken sausage gumbo instead of quiche if an evening game - that would have been good)

2:30 kickoff / 1:30 buffet

OK, so maybe a few hundred club seaters will show up, but most of their seats will be empty!

i never received the menu this year. Did I miss an email?

I think like most things UNT, you have to seek it out.

It is nice to see them upping the food game for the Thanksgiving weekend game...

It's not really excuses, but reasons. There is a certain contingent of fans that will show up any day/any time to watch the team. There are others who will show up when it's convenient. Making the majority of our games this year inconvenient has cost just as much, if not more, in attendance as the poor product on the field. Some of the scheduling was RV's fault and some was just bad luck, but all of it together has really hit the attendance numbers.

I never got the menu either.  Always got it in an email in prior years.
