Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Dallas-based entrepreneur Ashok Kumar Mago to the University of North Texas System Board of Regents. According to an official release from the governor’s office, his term will end on May 22, 2021.

“I feel honored to be asked by Hon. Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, to serve as a Regent for a prestigious institution like UNT,” Mago, chairman and CEO of the management consulting firm Mago and Associates, told The American Bazaar. “I look forward to work with other regents and chancellor to make UNT a premier institution in the nation.”

Mago, who received Padma Shri from the president of India, the fourth-highest civilian honor of the country, in 2014, is the first Indian American to be appointed to the UNT board.

Mago immigrated to the United States in 1974 after earning a bachelor’s degree from Delhi University. He received a Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Dallas.

A prominent Indian American community leader, Mago is the founding chairman of US-India Chamber, previously known as the Greater Dallas Indo American Chamber. He also serves on a number of boards including that of the Primary Care Clinic of North Texas, the Dallas Regional Chamber, the advisory board of BBVA Compass Bank in Dallas and the advisory board of Salvation Army of Dallas County.

The press release issued by Abbot’s office on November 9 also announced the reappointment of Brint Ryan and the appointment of Laura Wright to the UNT System Board of Regents.

Ryan is chairman and CEO of Ryan, LLC. Wright is a former chief financial officer of Southwest Airlines Co.

UNT, one of Texas’ largest universities, offers 99 bachelor’s, 83 master’s and 36 doctoral degree programs, according to the university.

Maybe he'll get behind athletics and we'll add cricket as a club sport.

Even if they did graduate from UNT there is a bit of danger, I would like to see some North Texas Letterman on the BOR.

I agree that the number of actual graduates is a concern. But it is not unusual for a board member to be a graduate of another university.

I noticed that Texas A&M has only one of their BOR who is not a graduate.

I assume that the Governor take the list from Lee Jackson but I do not know that for a fact.

Is it just me, or does it not seem like Lee Jackson is far removed from the average UNT alumni?  You look at places like Texas A&M and John Sharp (an alumnus of A&M), their chancellor is very much in the public eye and seems to be very engaged with the alumni and students... of course, Jackson did not attend or graduate from UNT.

Thankfully, it appears that our president is active and engaged which is a good thing.

A K Mago is a sharp businessman and if it makes good sense moneywise then I don't think that he'll be a deterrent.  But, I'm pretty sure that he's not into sports.

I'm a longtime Lion and knew A K when he was District Governor twenty years ago.  He was very thorough and did a good job but he was not a rah-rah type.  He is smart and should be a good regent.  As a forty year resident of DFW I would definitely take him over someone from Houston or San Antonio with no ties to the university.

While I do like perhaps a majority of UNT graduates, I don't see that all need to be longtime supporters.  The BOR acts upon recommendations from the administration; they don't formulate such policies.

I wish others here who post about the BOR actually knew as much as you do about how the BOR actually operates and what they are and are not responsible for in their oversight.  Thank you.  It is a breath of fresh air.
