Why would a kid sign to play for a coach who's job is very publicly on the line?

Seems like a smart move. If Benny is still around, sign in April.

We must show up to the pit and we must win now! Fans need to get their butts in the seats. Foolish to run off recruits because we don't support the team.

presumably this young man has been to a game during the Benford era and knows what the atmosphere is like already.

Early basketball signing runs 11/11 - 11/18. Late signing period opens up on 4/13.

Football signing period for high schoolers opens up on 2/3.

He can't sign on the same day with his football friends. He either has to sign 77 days before they do, or 69 days after they (probably) do.

Unless he's got a lot of good friends that play golf or run cross country, and it means a lot for him to sign an LOI at the same time they do... If Hollis "fully intends to sign with the Mean Green", there's still 5 more days to find a pen with ink in it and actually do it.

Thank you. Makes me wonder if this kid is legitimately considering signing for football, though. I believe Kansas offered him as a receiver, and he turned some heads this summer at some Dallas Cowboys high school camp. It looks like he didn't have a big year, but it was his first year playing football since junior high iirc.

Also, if he wanted to play both sports I believe he would have to sign for football, since if a scholarship athlete plays two sports, with one being football, it's an NCAA rule to count the scholarship towards football.

Athletic scholarship hierarchy is funny. If you're a female athlete who loves Volleyball and Field Hockey... Or if you're a male athlete that just loves water, frozen or not, and wants to play hockey and be on the diving team at the same time... They've got an assignment decision tree for who eats the scholarship out of their total count.

Interestingly... Baseball is apparently less significant than Water Polo in terms of avoiding scholarship limit fraud.

yeah, he is looking at what football options he has, and if he can possibly do both. Think our new coach would be stupid not to take this kid, his potential is off the charts.

I am hoping he decides to sign with us and be a dual sport athlete. We need his size and athleticism on the court!

Did you read what I posted above? Basically if he wants to be a dual sport athlete, signing now for basketball would eliminate that possibility. His scholarship has to count towards football in order for him to be eligible to play both sports.

If he's on scholarship for basketball (which would happen if he signs now), then he's not allowed to participate in football. As Tasty said, the NCAA has a scholarship hierarchy. It's to ensure that a school doesn't sign a bunch of kids who can run track, play baseball, basketball etc yet are really being signed to play football, for example.

I did but I guess I misunderstood it. So you can play on scholership for football and walk on in basketball, but not sign on for basketball and walk on for football. If that's the rules that is fine, I was just a bit confused. I do not know this young mans abilities so I am unsure where he would actually get more play time. I just know it would be nice to have him on the court in green.

Pretty sure he could sign now for basketball and then if he makes the football team then his scholarship would actually come from the football numbers. Nothing would prevent him from signing now afaik.

Right. If he's on scholarship and wants to play football, his scholarship has to count towards football. Maybe our new coach likes him and agrees to it, and Benford agrees to it (it would save Benford a scholarship but  he would miss the beginning of basketball season).

1. We don't have a coach, so he has no way of knowing if our coach would offer him. It's one thing to let him on the team as a walkon, but it's another to know he automatically takes up a scholarship by being on the team. By going through the rest of the recruiting process he can see who will allow him to play both.

2. I'm not sure about this, but if he signs wouldn't that guarantee him for a scholarship at least for next season (2016-2017 school year)? That would prohibit him from participating with the football team his entire freshman year.

I think the way it would work is if Benford offered him a scholly he would start out counting against the basketball limit. If it was later determined that the football team wanted him to play and he made the team he would count against the football recruiting class and the basketball a holly would be freed up.

However, if the new coach did not have an interest he would still be covered under his basketballs scholly.

At least that is how I think it would work.

If he starts out counting towards basketball then he misses his entire freshman year of football. Cannot even practice with the team if he's on scholarship for basketball, and he's raw, so he really needs that developmental time and can't afford to take another year off after playing his first year of high school ball.

No matter what your take on the situation is, it makes all the sense in the world to hold off on signing if he really is contemplating playing both.

Wide receiver

Think ol' Benny is just as excited (if not more) than any of us on here about the new coach hire?   I mean, we have 3 dudes committed for football ATM.  Surely the new guy could spare a spot if Benny lets the new guy borrow him for football season?

To be honest, this kid may have more potential in football. Statistically speaking, he's much, much more likely to get drafted as a 6'5" receiver than as a 6'5" combo forward. Here are some quotes from the Cowboys camp he participated in this summer.

“He was hard to guard all day,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He must have caught 10 touchdown passes. They tried every trick coverage on him they could, but he kept producing.”

It came as no surprise that Hollis earned MVP accolades, leading Brandon Carr’s team to a 35-22 victory over Jason Witten’s team in the championship round.

If I can go to college and play both, I’m definitely going to do it, like off the top,” Hollis said. “If that’s what I can do, then I’ll do it. If I had to pick one, I don’t know which one I’d pick yet, honestly.”

Garrett certainly would endorse him playing more football.

“He told me very humbly that he’s a big-time basketball player, too, but I told him nobody guarded him for three hours so maybe you should think about playing more football,” Garrett said. “He seems to like it a lot and he’s certainly darn good at it.”

Witten even joked that the Cowboys should sign Hollis, saying: “We could definitely use him.”
