I have not posted often lately, but was this a bit or a real phenomena?

This past week has been a Chico-palooza around here. There were a lot of hot-sports opinions about how he's the right guy for the job.

Can't blame this mess on Canales, I think he is managing the situation as well as anyone could.   However, this program need a complete flush starting with the AD.

Did you not notice that we had zero points until trash time again. Canales isn't to blame?

That's like saying that we can't blame rain for getting the ground wet.

Chico has been building his offense for six years and it is functionally inept as far as contributing to the games outcome in any way, shape, or form. It is 100% Chico's responsibility.

Yes, you can blame every coach, player, and everyone up to the BOR.  However, I was not trying to refer to the talent and development of the team, but rather to the job of interim HC.

You can blame him for not having the offense ready after their turnover in the first quarter and not being able to get the offense ready before the play clock ran down and we had to call a timeout.  You can also blame him for putting the field goal team out there when the ball was on the 39 in the first quarter, then putting the punt team out there and having to call a timeout before the play clock ran out.  And then calling our last timeout in FIRST quarter with about 4 minutes left.  Unbelievable!  I like him, but not for our coach...at any position.

Listen, Chico is the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.  And, interim head coach.

QB position is the worst, easily, in FBS.  We have zero FBS-level QBs on the roster.  He's been recruiting for and coaching that position for six years.

He gambled big time on candy-assed head cases who wanted to live on their YouTube highlights and rivals rankings.  On the other hand, he simply signed guys who were long shots out of high school.

How do you not hold the QB coach responsible to the terrible play from that position?

It's over.  Next year:  new coaches, new quarterbacks.  Nowhere to go but up.

But he is directly responsible for the offense. It's not like he hasn't been here the last 6 years...

OK, who do any of you think NT could have put at interim coach and done better?

I don't think there is anyone.  And he has done it before so there is the experience factor.

Are you sure you're that ready to lionize the guy for edging a really, really bad UTSA team? I'm happy to have the win and all, but we got outperformed at home by a crappy UTSA team starting a 4th string walk-on quarterback and had to rely on a fumble return to score enough to win.

Everything else has been the same horror show we've been watching for two years, just with a little more rah-rah.

I like Mike, my bike likes Mike, but he's just not a viable part of the future of this program.

It's not a question of who could have "done better" because no one was going to do well with this roster.  Canales is responsible, and has been for over half a decade, for the QB position and offense here.

The QB position is devoid of talent, and the offense only moves against twos, threes, and scout teamers at the end of games.

The point is that the people who think he should be evaluated as our head coach are sorely ignoring the fact that he is responsible for the QB mess that is clogging up the roster now.  All we are saying is, we know what he can do and can't do.  And, we wish him well at his next stop.

And, look, it's probably better off for Mike to make a fresh start somewhere else as well.  What in the hell good would it do to, by some minute chance, keep him, and then have another disastrous season in 2016.

Everyone needs a clean start - the team, the school, and Mike.

As stated before, I'd welcome stays from Coaches Patrick and Perry. Beyond that, everyone should go out and get a fresh start.

I think Canales is doing as good a job as anyone could as interim coach.  This is a bad team that is trying to get the season over with that got hammered by a fc division team, so I would not downplay a win over any team.

I have never stated that Canales should be here in any capacity post season.  Again, who do you think could do a better job as interim coach?  Why would anyone think that the team is magically going to get better by firing the head coach?  I suspect the horror show will continue if not get a lot worse in the last 3 games.

Canales is doing the job of an interim coach which is manage a terrible situation and if possible win a game and maybe two. I don't think he did his previous job as OC and QB development very well, but that has nothing to do with being the interim coach. I think it's time for a new staff although it should be completely up to the new HC if any of the current staff get interviews. I certainly don't put much blame for this season on any graduate assistants we might have!

But blaming the interim coach of a bad team for a loss is like blaming the sun for rising.

Plenty of coaches out there could have led the Mean Green to these same results.   Some of them probably could do better.  Especially preparing better for LATech.

The WKU game was to be expected coming off 5 days from McCarney being fired VS the best C-USA team.  No harm, no foul here.
The Marshall game... on the road, fantastic team.  Results to be expected.
Got the win VS UTSA.  I guess it doesn't matter how.  Good job.  Now, time to build off of it and get better...
The LATech game was the most disappointing game of Canales' 2nd interim tenure so far.  I expected the team to play much better than that.

Really!  You think there is a coach out there that would come in as interim coach without knowing anything about the team and lead this staff and team to a better performance than Canales.   Yet you think that Canales did ok in the first 3 games, with only La Tech a disappointment.

Have you ever heard of any fb team that fired it's coach and has brought in an outsider in mid season?

Wait, what?
I never said I think he "did OK".   I think the results of those games would have been vitrually the same whether it was Chico, or Scrappy coaching the team.

I DO however, think that after 3 games, the team could have been much more prepared and ready for LATech.  I do believe someone else could have done better than Chico in that scenario, yes.

To the 2nd part, no.  And I'm not advocating that, because the only way it would happen is for the new guy to have a multi-year deal... and that means you didn't get to interview/hire the right guy AFTER his season was over.

The point I'm trying to make is that Canales is not "whipping these guys into shape" to the tune of him being considered for the HC position like so many people were claiming last week.

To more directly answer your question:  I think Tommy Perry, Mike Simmonds, or anyone else not named Cosh/Quartaro could have led this team to the same exact results (maybe better) than what we've seen out of Chico.   Better?

Coach Canales gives a little bit of detail how he and other members of the North Texas coaching staff have simply neglected to perform their duties recruiting and developing players during his six year tenure.

Now he has a surefire, but secret, method for improving the situation if he is kept around. “We need to step back and look at ourselves and ask, ‘How do we fix this?’” Canales said. “I have a plan to fix this.”

Seriously? What's this, a midnight stay of execution request because of partial admission of guilt and a pledge to do better?

“It’s no knock on coach Mac or anyone else, but I think we need to do a better job of recruiting and in development of our players,” Canales said. “We have had players come in and not grow much since their freshman year. Somehow we have to get that fixed."

Still campaigning, but in such an odd way. "I've known how to fix this for 6 years, I've just been waiting for McCarney to get fired to let anyone know." Are you kidding me?

I can't really Blame Chico, as he knows he won't be able to get an OC gig at a FBS after his stint at UNT. He is giving everything he has got to fool the most gullible AD in FBS football into hiring him. But even RV seems to get Chico isn't the right hire.

Hopefully those supporting him for head coach have seen the error of their ways and let the terrible idea lie.
