... in a perfect world, I would like an older coach to mentor him with the understanding that mentor would give way to the protege as head coach in 4 years.

Like...Mac?  Or Dodge?  In a perfect world, one of them would have won a bit more and could have stuck around long enough to mentor someone.  But we've had a hard enough time finding ONE winner...so the next closest thing to a "perfect world" that would allow us to still do this would require us to keep making coaching hires until we've found a seasoned veteran with a solid winning record that would actually come here for whatever we're now paying...AND have him be successful...AND then give him a few years to teach someone ELSE of high caliber how to be even...what, higher caliber-er-er?  For all of that, we could still go through 1 or 2 more flops WITH SHORTER CONTRACTS and still come out ahead sooner than one flop with that ideal behind it.  I totally see where you're coming from, but it assumes way too much.  AND...when other schools have found "the next hot young coach" (like Harbaugh), have they said, "Oh, by the way, before you actually take the HC job, we don't really have faith in you, so you're going to be the OC and coach-in-waiting under this other dude we just hired"?  I know Texas had Muschamp, but Mack was there for a while before they started the coach-in-waiting stupidity.

WTF???? He's the OC at OU... Let me repeat, he's the OC at OU.. Why the F would a 32 year old OC at OU come to UNT to be the OC?

I can't anymore.. I really cant...

"put a legitimate older trusted winner face on the program"

Please amuse me... Give me some names that you want and that you realistically think we have a shot at.

I'm worried that all of this really might not be as pessimistic as it sounds.  On one hand, I don't wanna just have the "take what we can get" mentality, but really, holding out for better options only works when there ARE other options, you know?  I want us to take someone who will actually give us what we need...but for that to happen, we have to be lucrative enough for them to actually come.  Fingers crossed, man, but I'm afraid you may be more right than not, and I hate that that is the case.

I believe someone leaked on here a long time ago that Riley was interested in UNT's OC opening when Chico was hired.  That was the same time that the pirate was fired and he did not have employment lined up for the next year.  Called a heckuva game for Tech in their bowl game that year, and when Ruffin McNeil (Tech's DC) was hired as HC at East Carolina, Riley tagged along as his OC.

Surely if he were interested then, he'd be interested now.

i thought Riley did a solid job too the years he was at East Carolina.  UNT needs to at least make a phone call.

Didn't know he was from Muleshoe. The gem of West Texas

Being a Midlander who spent some time at Tech....wife's from Odessa........I personally would love to see a West Texan Red Raider ex at HC....but Cumbie fits that description too. IF you consider Abilene West Texas.... That's a big IF!

Abilene is part of West Texas because Abilene High/Cooper were in the Little SWC along with Midland High/Lee and Odessa High/Permian.

you've had plenty of leading statements over the past few days and I'm surprised no one else has pressed...so...do you maybe want to elaborate a bit more on what you're hearing?

I've already threatened to kidnap his loved ones and that didn't work so I'm at a loss here on how to escalate the situation.

seems presumptuous.

maybe we could have @Harry disable the board's ability to post gifs until he spills.

I am elaborating as much as I feel I can right now.

I know people have to judge whether or not this is reliable, but I think I have a long track record.*

ETA:  *Long track record of being Hella Cool.  I just wanted that on the record.

You are a moderator of a fan board for teams that have been repeatedly and forcefully nut kicked for decades. You should be numb, hopeless and without feelings at this point.

BTW: thanks for the info you and others with knowledge have provided thus far.

You immediately lost all credibility using the word hella

If the choice is between Riley and Briles, give me Riley for two reasons:
(1) More seasons as an OC
(2) Success as OC at two different stops, P5 and non-P5
(3) Hasn't drawn NCAA investigations of his recruiting yet; Briles has done so twice already in his short career

One problem with both, though, is that they have little boy names.

Would be happy with either one of these guys.

Me, too.  Mike Norvell and Lincoln Riley would be my top 2.  I like that both have at least semi-recent experience coaching within CUSA.  That will help us, and them, get off the ground quicker.

Both would be home run hires, impo.

This.  Either would know what a prep or JUCO QB should look like for this level of play.  I think Chico and Mac, having coached at higher levels, thought they could bring in some guys who had huge holes in their game and bring them along slowly.

It didn't work.

I think if these are seriously the candiates - guys like Riley, Norvell, etc. - then we will have QBs who already have the tools to succeed, on and off the field; and, so, there won't be any gambling at the position any longer.
