Agreed. Remember that article on ESPN about UNT hiring a top minority coach. I am searching for the link.... Least to say it wasn't that fantastic of a hire.

Found the original link.

Benford was an A hire while JJ was a F. Let's not put much into articles like this....

r

Its simple. Hire the best coach!

Agree with all posters that football is football. Having said that, Jay Norvell gets my interest and I hope his resume is in the stack for review.

Do not care about their race as long as they can coach and recruit.

If we were to hire Mike Lockley I would never attend another game and would have to turn in my mean green shirts.  The guy took over at New Mexico and it was disaster.  I think he lasted two years and was bought out his contract.  The program was in terrible shape and his players were always on the news. Lockley was 2-22 at UNM.

Really? We need the best man for the job, black, white or brown! No token hires, just the best hire for god sake!!! One more bad hire and you may see athletics disappear for good, so this better be a good one!

The NCAA sent a directive to universities a few years ago on this topic and strongly suggested that schools interview minority candidates. The directive has no punishment for non-compliance like the NFL's Rooney rule does so schools don't have to comply. Look for at least one minority interview whether wrong or right. Look for someone like Frank Wilson out of LSU to get an interview.

Consider the coach, not the skin...

Im Glad someone said it. I dont give a crap if our next coach is orange, I just want someone that can come in here and can have winning seasons on a consistent basis.

I see all the really good programs hire the best candidate who will win. We might want to try that for once and forget the NCAA.

I agree whole heartedly just saying that RV will probably provide a token interview to a minority.

Race shouldn't matter but their is a disparity between white head coaches versus minority head coaches in the FBS. Considering the amount of minority players that have played the game and are in the game now it makes you wonder when will it ever change?  Think of all the programs in CUSA, how many head coaches are white?  100% of them before Mac got the axe. Canales would be the only minority and probably will not be a head coach at the FBS level next year. He'll also more than likely be replaced by a white person.

I would like to see UNT turn over every stone looking for the best coach.  Minority coaches can be viewed like under-recruited prospects.  There are still FBS programs throughout the country not ready for a minority head coach.  That isn't the case at UNT and UNT has a history of being progressive when it comes to race in their athletic programs.  UNT brought in African America players 10 years before teams in the old SWC did.  So if we can gain an advantage just like UNT did back then we should look at candidates that maybe overlooked for the wrong reason (race).  But you absolutely can't hire the wrong coach for the "pc right" reason.
