I see who everyone wants but anyone care to guess who it will be?  I have no idea who it will be.

too many possibilities, many of the better candidates have not as of yet been even mentioned.

methinks it will play out similar to Mac...none of us had a clue he was even in the mix until he was named.

One name that I have not seen brought up is Shawn Elliott the Interim Head Coach at South Carolina.  Granted he has no ties to Texas but every thing that heard about him from AppSt fans has been good.  Also like Chico he will be more than likely on the job market at the end of the season since USC will more than likely hire a bigger name HC that will bring in there own new staff.  tInteri

Dino Babers

He certainly has quite a range of experience to draw from.

Coordinator under Dick Tomey, RC Slocum, Karl Dorrell, and (most recently/importantly) Art Briles.  Should still have quite a few TX recruiting ties.

Has 3 more years on his Bowling Green contract @ 400k/yr.  Double him up and I bet he listens.

I could see us offering Fritz but Georgia Southern matching. I think it'll be someone who has won as an FBS head coach before, like Mccarney. That way RV can say he hired the most qualified person and it wasn't his fault it didn't work out.

I'll say Derek Dooley.

Derek Dooley?? Please, no.

I'll say some 1) a guy that no one has heard of that will get no one excited or 2) a guy that people have heard of that will get no one excited.

Knowing RV he'll bring in a career OL coach who's team has had success and after it doesn't work we'll hear, "Well, we tried to bring in an offensive "mind" and it just didn't work out. But, I, of course, think it was a great hire."

Last night on the wrap-up show after the TCU-WVU game, North Texas got a mention.  Before going to break, the anchor teased something to the effect...."coming up after the break, we take a look at the most intriguing head coach opening....<pause>....North Texas...<pause>...hahaha, just kidding.   See you after the commercial."

No such thing as bad press, I guess.

Years ago when I was buying stuff in a public organization and wanted to try something on the leading edge (technology-wise) I was told "Do what you want but nobody is ever fired for buying IBM."

I never said this is who I wanted. I think he falls very much into your second category, and I see that being the type of hire RV gets.

As someone who grew up a Tennessee fan, I would be very upset at this hire. Just think it would be a very RV hire.

@ValleyBoy do you thing Georgia Southern would match $1.5M/Yr?

I'll answer your question. No.

I also hope we don't offer that big of a contract.

5yr 7.5M is steep. That is a lot of buyout money. If we do offer that we have to be 100% sure it is not just a good hire, but a great hire to the point that someone will be paying us for his services elsewhere.

If they have any common sense they will look at these two...

or

http://lionathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=2

FWIW, here is how the local beat writer sees the hire.

Since this article has been written, Ivey has moved on to Austin Peay in Tennessee.......his home state.

Both guys are young, run high powered offenses, and both have head coaching experience.........positive head coaching experience,

They both should know a LOT of Texas high school coaches. And in the case of Carthel, any coach he doesn't know, his daddy (Don) should know.

Time to move past the Carthels.   Not happening.  Those are not the guys to be running North Texas football.

Hmmm, I wonder what part of their experience is so unattractive. Turning around (in both cases one year turn around) two almost dead programs, or having recruited about 7 NFL draft picks.

Thomsen is someone exactly who I described. Someone no one has heard of and will get no one excited. For the better part of his career he has also been an OL coach. He had a nice little stint at ACU, but who cares. In about 5 years this will get us right around exactly where we are. In other words, this guy is on RV's short list.

The part about coaching at the D-II level, which is only a step above TX High School football.

I don't know who RV has in mind, but what I do know is that years later we'll learn the revisionist history version of events--about how Smatresk "forced" him to make the hire.

I kid, I kid . . . actually, I'll give RV the benefit of the doubt for once and say that as an impressive grand finale to his career, he somehow convinces Fritz to come here.
