Police brass like to see contacts.  It can be in any form.  Just from the start of the video, she was walking with traffic.  If a sidewalk is not accessible, you are supposed to walk against traffic.  So yes, they were within their right to suggest you use the sidewalk.  They are within their right to request your ID.  You were not stopped for "walking while black" so STFU.

It's also cute how you have to name drop the mayor and all of your merits.

Well... If she *was* walking and she *is* black... Doesn't that technically mean she was guilty? Sounds like the system works.

We live in a society of laws. Don't like it? Stand still, or change races. Problem solved.

So she lied in her story? How can she be a journalist and journalism professor if she has integrity issues?

At least she didn't claim she was shot down in a helicopter. Oh well. Either way she looks stupid and embarrassed North Texas. It's a national news story now.

Could they add her name to the banner and flyers around campus? "Fire Rick Villareal & Dorothy Bland"?

She won't need a banner, I bet she will be dismissed at the end of the semester if not sooner.

I said it in the other topic on this and I'll say it again. I can guarantee she is being praised by many students/faculty. The social/political agendas pushed in various schools are ridiculous and overtly liberal at times. It was a breath of fresh air being in the college of business every day.

I've seen racial profiling and this isn't it. Nothing like, "you match the description" or, "you don't seem to belong here." Just basic questions. And asking her to stay on the sidewalk or close to the side of the road.

She messed up with the editorial and she messed up by dragging UNT into this. Now we've got her mess and the mess of a whole lot of other people involved.

My thoughts exactly.  When it's actually racial profiling, excessive us of force, etc., I'm totally behind the people fighting for their rights.  But this is a great example of an obviously intelligent person still showing a capacity for lunacy or stupidity (though I'll feel kind of bad if it turns out to be early-onset Alzheimer's or dementia).

Everyone is a member of more than one demographic.  Dumbasses (even smart ones) appear in every race.  It is possible to be stopped, arrested, and yes, in some cases, shot for being too much of a dumbass without it being a racial issue.  So when the Black Lives Matter movement is brought up, it's always important to try to distinguish whether race was actually a factor, or if dumbassery (or criminal activity) came into play (and of course whether a dumbass or a criminal of a different race would have been treated the same way is important to consider as well).

It's a fallacy of logic to presume that just because there's evidence of systemic racial overtones, that every police interaction with a person of color is taking place because of prejudicial injustice.

I'm excited to see any and all evidence of this, because that would really piss me off much more than a non-existent hypothetical. Thanks goodness this story got that patented Wife2Hot4U bump it needed to get some attention on the board.

Is the official response from UNT enough evidence for you?

In response to the comments about Dorothy Bland’s recent opinion piece in the Dallas Morning News:

As members of their communities, University of North Texas administrators, faculty and staff members have the same rights and obligations as other citizens.

Unfortunately, Bland attached her title to her personal column in the Dallas Morning News. UNT seeks to make clear that in her column and in all associated matters, Bland was not acting or speaking on behalf of the university.

Bland’s interactions with the Corinth Police and her communications about her perceived experience are her private business.

UNT encourages our administrators, faculty and staff members to measure the gravity of their rights and obligations as a private citizen in light of their responsibilities to their individual professions, the university, and our students. When administrators and faculty and staff members speak and act as private citizens they should make clear that they are not speaking or acting on behalf of the university.

UNT encourages individuals to read the columns that ran in the Dallas Morning News, and then watch the video to draw their own conclusions.

That said, among UNT’s greatest assets is the collective diversity of thought at this university, our willingness to respect and examine differing perceptions and viewpoints, and our ability to engage in constructive dialogue in a civil manner. The university encourages others to have respectful discussion of the matter and attempt to see the situation from all points of view.

Whoa - this hot taek of "praising her" by distancing from the whole situation and trying to remove the university from the discussion is awful. The real cherry on top is them having the gall to tell people it's probably best to not be shitty to other people they don't know as a general principle for life. I'm ready to be outraged now.

That said, most places would fire you for even creating the mix-up of an op-ed from the university, so would not be shocked if some time passed and then we didn't hear from her again. Hard to imagine she could continue on here long-term, but it is North Texas...

To me it's typical UNT. Instead of making a quick and decisive decision, they put out a statement asking us all to get a long without really doing anything. Leaving the whole situation in limbo and a lot of people pissed. I'm guessing they're scared to take any sort of disciplinary action, which is sad.

I see a gofundme opportunity.

Why do you need or anyone who read the Fox News story need an immediate scalp here? I may have missed the officer or the police department calling for her firing, but it seems like they had a great opportunity to show how things often do and should work and it was awesome to see her claim get destroyed through the process. Is it fair to say it seems like most people want her punished so they can finally feel like they are pushing back on a bigger political movement? I don't really follow the Journalism school, but I'm fine with the story dying in a few days after the next outrage and skipping all of the ancillary fallout of a bold, public termination that would mean more headlines and headaches for everyone involved.
