IF this guy is in town talking to RV, then maybe it's RV's way of messing with everyone that is calling for his firing.

And then the guy he's really wanting doesn't look bad at all to anyone.

Well, looks aren't everything.

I, for one, am sorry to hear that it is probably not true.  I would love to have Mark Mangino.  The man was both a Broyles Award winner and an AP Coach of the Year.  He won an Orange Bowl at Kansas (Kansas!!).  Those of you who compare him to Dan McCarney have no idea what you are talking about.  The man would have us competing for C-USA titles every year, no doubt.  I'm going to end up so mad when we get freaking Spav....

MeanGreenTeeth other than academic fraud, multiple allegations of player mistreatment over the course of his career and being fired from his OC job at Iowa State, I wonder why any program wouldn't want Mark?  You have set a really low bar for this program with your support for Mark as head coach.

It's like I'm living in an alternate universe... I thought the idea was to get a coach who can win a lot of games.  Academic Fraud.. are you kidding me?  A 15 sec google search shows that he was cleared of having any knowledge of the situation.  Besides..let's look at some other names folks have mentioned:

Applewhite:  Had an affair with a student assistant.  It wasn't exposed until a couple years later when another coach sued UT for being fired for a similar violation.  Great Achievements:  1. Fired from Alabama. 2.  Never being trusted enough to be play caller at UT.  3.  Doing well at Houston this year ( I don't follow Houston, so I honestly don't know how impressive that is or not).

Kendal Briles:  Suspended 1 game this season for recruiting violations.  Great Achievements:  Son of Art Briles. (I actually am intrigued with Kendal though he's a bit of a Hail Mary pick IMHO)

The only valid point I think you have is that he has been known to be a bit of a jerk (this reputation concerns me from a recruiting perspective).  I honestly think that the major issue most of you have is that he is really really fat and you find that embarrassing.

From a superficial standpoint, it could be difficult for targets to take him seriously when he slugs his way into the living room. He better be one hell of a salesmen to overcome that, because as much as we may not want to admit it, aesthetics do play a factor on how a coach is perceived, and he is a direct reflection of the program.

However, if he can bring the right people with him, to include a successor that will continue to build on any positives, it could work. I still don't think it's the right answer to hire him, but I would have to hear his vision of how we would win and whom he would bring along for the ride. Sadly, few of us would ever be privy to such conversations.

All I know is that 4 years ago I would have jumped at the chance to land Mangino here.   My main concern now is that he has been out of the game for a while, when it comes to being a head coach.  His wife had cancer, which kept him out of the game for a while.

Mangino is know to be a tireless recruiter.   When he was HC at KU he hit Texas hard.   In fact, 42% of his 2008 and 2009 classes came from Texas.

Such a crap shoot.   I hope we get lucky this time, no matter who our coach is.

Four bowl appearances and three wins in them = one strong year?  Is this that new Common Core Math we keep hearing about?

If you are a P5, only winning 6 or 7 games is nothing to write home about.  So yes, only one strong year out of his entire Kansas career. I stand by what i said.

If you look at all my post, I have never supported any the candidates you mentioned except Applewhite and that would only be under Mack Brown as AD maybe.  And as head coach you are still to blame for not knowing what is going on with your program from an academic standpoint.  So comparing that with a personal affair is not on the same level unless the person you are having affair with is a student or another employee of the university.   If you have no knowledge it still doesn't stop the NCAA from leveling sanactions against your school if the academic fraud actually occured.  A 50-48 record is the definition of medicore and the Big 12 North was always the weaker division of the Big 12 and the only historically dominating program up there was Nebraska.  So I stand by my reletively low bar evaluation because I don't see another mid-level G5 FBS program or above being interested in him as a head coach.   Because I bet if UNT doesn't sign him that you won't hear his name in connection with any other FBS head coaching opening this offseason.   I would not be opposed to him as the offensive coordinator at UNT but nothing more than that.  And I don't care what he looks like either he could look like Steelers coach Mike Tomilin and I still would be interested if he had the same resume.  I would just like to steer clear of guys in their 50s or older with medicore records who have just been fired.  This rumor reeks of UNT's deperation and dysfunction otherwise the leak would not have been taken seriously.

If this is what it takes to finally get some decent husky-sized UNT gear, I'm on board with him.

I would give 10 likes if I could. Post of the day.
