While drinking Friday night and talking to my Aggie buddy about the state of UNT football, it dawned on me that all three head football coaches under RV have been fired mid-season.  His exact comment was, "Wow, that's where coaching dreams go to die."  Hard to disagree with that sentiment.  RV has set the precedent and its not a good one.  Any prospective head coach will know this and it has to be a turn off to be hired by someone who will put their head under the guillotine in front of the players, fans, or whoever else is watching at that moment when RV has had enough.  The bad thing is that it appears that RV will get another chance to behead someone else.  If this hire doesn't work out, I hope its RV's head under the ax for everyone to see.

I think it would've been far worse for him to leave McCarney in place until season's end. Todd Dodge was still a fan of the program for the remainder of the season he was let go because of Riley. The last two times it seems to have worked out well. The first time, when Dickey was allowed to coach out the season after being fired, was a major mistake and he should have been replaced by Kenny Evans instead.

I have no problem firing mid-season.  Most programs do it when they are in such poor shape.  This is common to any program, or should be, if they are ranked last in the entire league after 4 years or more...

StealthEagle84, you should also explain to your Aggie friend that the root of the problem is RV, the guy responsible for hiring the three fired coaches in the first place.  He is innkeeper of of the "coaches graveyard".

And then tell him that RV has been here as the AD for 15 years...

And that we aren't firing him, either...so he can get to hire another football coach and probably another basketball coach in the next 6 months. That will be the hat trick--fire three coaches in your revenue sports that the AD hired... within 12 months...and keep his job.

Nowhere else in America.

Please allow me a war story. This reminds me of YEARS ago sitting around the table in a loan officers' meeting to discuss loans we made the week prior. The senior loan officer reads the name of the borrower, the amount, and collateral, if any. The officer who made the loan defends it. Someone around the table questions his sanity and the lender says "Well, he's a good ole boy...and his wife is a school teacher."  True story, circa 1978.

After the loss to Portland St, both DMac and the person who hired him should have been fired immediately.

But, hey, we are UNT, so 1 out of 2 ain't bad. <Meatloaf semi-reference>

Dodge and McCarney were RV hires; Dickey was a leftover from the previous AD.  He was hired in 1998.

Uh, yes, but..................I'm anticipating it will be three once RV makes this next hire.  Just saying.............

Way, way too early to even think about the next hire being a failure.

Yeah...I mean just look at his track record for hiring coaches. How could anyone think this could end in failure?///UNT17

Yes.  We are UNT, AND I AM PROUD OF IT.  Am I happy with everything that has gone on?  No.  I am not happy about the football program.  I am still hopeful for both basketball programs.  I am very unhappy with the "We are UNT" used in a derogatory  manner time after time.    I am proud of the university that prepared me so well to be successful in my chosen field.  So, yes, I am UNT.

Keep on trusting in RV...give him another 15 years. One of these days, he's bound to get one right--and break that pesky .500 hurdle for a football coach.

And probably in the next 15 years, you'll be able to attend a Season Ticket Night at Apogee and the Super Pit and get to enjoy the new promotion--"Buy Season Tickets and you can pick out the entire row you want with each ticket that gets purchased!!" Lock in your chance to watch Liberty University play at Apogee or Northwood University at the Super Pit while you have the chance...or before you change your mind.

No deal, we already have row in the Super Pit. Ok, one seat short of a row now. We dropped our fifth ticket after Benford's first year and the oldest graduated HS.

I'll bet RV is out in 18 months when his contract is not renewed.  He could be out sooner but I'd give his stay a maximum 18 month stay.

Was Marvin ever actually wrong the entire series?

Perhaps this quote sums up being a Mean Green fan the best:

"The first ten million years were the worst. And the second ten million: they were the worst, too. The third ten million I didn't enjoy at all. After that, I went into a bit of a decline. "
