This isn't embarrassing at all, RV!! Keep it up, big guy!! You're killing it, alright...just killing it--fanbase, reputation, any chance of hiring anyone with half a brain ... Such a proud moment yet again, here in October.

Way to go Armadillos!! You can cross that highway with traffic coming--just keep your head down and ignore every possible bit of reality that surrounds you, RV!!

He definitely transformed basketball with the Benford hire.

Interesting that he talks about himself in past tense ("what I brought to the party").

Hope?

Also, so frustrating to hear him talk like we are in the same place we were in 2001. We aren't.

And we are going backward. Rapidly.

Todd Dodge was all we could afford? But wait I thought RV was the great fund raiser, you mean he could not get out of his chair and glad hand more donors to bring in a better choice?

Or did he piss off alums with the way he treated DD at the end, he had already sabotaged Dodge from the start anyways by not allowing him to retain any of the staff due to his petty pissing match with DD.

Hold on. First, there's a huge difference in financial support at NT between Dec 2006 and today. Fouts was the stadium and a new one was a just a dream without any plan. Back then Mattress Mac was giving the largest donation in history verse this year we honored three donors all larger than Matress Mac. And in December 2006 Dodge was given more money than any previous coach but still was in the bottom third, iirc, of Sunbelt coaching salaries. RV had to beg the school to give that much! Today Mac was making in the top half of coaches in CUSA.

Secondly, RV did not piss off the alumni by firing DD when he did. Most were angry he didn't do it sooner and furious that DD was allowed to coach till the end of the season. Remember the black jerseys? The alumni hated DD back then, not RV.

Third, there is huge difference between you can't keep the old staff and you must bring in all high school coaches. I think RV should have made Dodge bring in new, experienced college coordinators and then mixed in a few of his high school staff. Even today there are demands for a totally new staff with no retentions.

There were many, many posts on this board that Dodge was probably the best we could afford at the time. The popular phrase then was "high risk with high reward." Folks focused on the possible cheap high reward without paying attention to the high risk.

There are enough problems with things RV has done without inventing false ones!

Thats just an excuse and a typical defensive comment.

I don't think I have out sized expectation.  In fact, I think unt90 has called my expectation defeatist.  I know we are not going to ever be one of the top program sin the state, the P5 schools have too much of a money lead on us.  What I do expect is for us to be a top G5 school.  We should be in position to constantly threaten to win CUSA.  Instead this is how the last "good hire" performed:

TOTAL SCORING OFFENSE

6.    WKU - 44.0  <-- First Full FBS season, 2009
22.    Middle Tennessee    - 37.3
26.    Louisiana Tech - 36.7
38.    Southern Miss - 34.7
55.    Marshall - 31.9
68.    RICE - 29.3
78.    FIU - 27.6  <-- First Full FBS season, 2005
100.    Florida Atlantic - 23.2  <-- First Full FBS season, 2005
108.    UTEP    - 21.3
109.    UTSA    - 20.9   <-- First Full FBS season, 2014
114.    Old Dominion - 20.0  <-- First Full FBS season, 2014
120.    Charlotte -    19.2  <-- First Full FBS season, 2015
124.    North Texas - 17.0

TOTAL SCORING DEFENSE

19.    Marshall - 17.4
50.    WKU    - 24.0  <-- First Full FBS season, 2009
53.    FIU - 24.1  <-- First Full FBS season, 2005
63.    Southern Miss - 25.9
82.    Middle Tennessee    - 28.7
83.    Louisiana Tech - 28.9
91.    Florida Atlantic - 31.8  <-- First Full FBS season, 2005
94.    Old Dominion - 32.0  <-- First Full FBS season, 2014
99.    Charlotte - 32.3  <-- First Full FBS season, 2015
107.    UTSA    - 35.1  <-- First Full FBS season, 2014
116.    RICE - 37.8
123.    UTEP    - 43.0
128.    North Texas - 50.2

124th in the nation in scoring, 128 in scoring defense.  Dead last in our conference.   Even worse, the previous "good hire" also left us at the very bottom of our conference.

Can't wait for the next "good hire!"

Coach Don Carthal was a solid..experienced head coach who had built a very good program at West Texas A&M.  He was well aware of Dickey's salary when he told our own SilverEagle that he wanted our job...applied for it but never so much as recieved a phone call.

This pattern was followed when we hired Benford, with Danny Kaspar at SFA.

There were plenty of viable candidates out there we could have afforded.

Rick V Fake Jerry on coaching pool: "The pool is always going to be limited unless the number is where you can negotiate whatever it is."

Thanks for bringing this one up. I thought maybe RV was having a mini stroke and jumbling his nonsensical words.

He could have afforded Don Carthel at WTA&M. And back in 2006 Don Carthel told me in an e-mail that he would love to hear from someone at NT about the job.

In 2013 the current head coach of WTA&M Michael Nesbitt was paid 117,300. I seriously doubt that Don Carthel was paid any more than that in 2006 when Dodge was hired.

That right there tells us everything we need to know.

I admit was intrigued by Dodge hire at the time and hoped he would do well, he did put a spark in the fanbase, but then failed on the field, with that said if Carthel and others were available yet never so much as got a phone call, that is just pathetic and then same thing happened in 2010 and probably will happen here again. RV has his candidate in mind already and other need not apply. RV hires -- Peterson (ran off the best players, and crashed WBB), Benford (totally destroyed best UNT Team), DMac (losing record for career, could not recruit and managed to make UNT sink even lower in the football realm, but hey he gets $2.1 million for his demolition job)

To be accurate, I sent him an e-mail and said "has anyone from North Texas contacted you about the head coach opening?". His response "I'd love to hear from someone at North Texas about the job".  I have no knowledge that he contacted the athletic department about being a candidate. But what this exchange tells me is that there WERE other viable coaching options for RV to consider. To say otherwise is a lie.
