That article says nothing about Smatresk making the hire

Zach Barnett, of football scoop, is the one who apparently is giving that, well, scoop. That's what I took from the tweet, and the article was by him. I don't know how legitimate that is, but it's interesting to say the least.

I didn't see anything supporting that statement either.

However, if this is true, you have wonder if that's good news for you Fritz fans.  Smatresk's last football hire was a dude who ate up the FCS with National Champion Montana: Bobby Hauk, who was awful for 4 out of his 5 years at UNLV (we smoked them at the HoD Bowl in his 1 good year).  Think Smatresk is going to draw on that past experience and pass on Fritz?

RV will say he made the hire until the hires fails, then he will blame somebody, anybody else.

Just like he did in a certain letter to a certain member of this board.

Explain to me how an athletic director could keep his job if the university he works for decides to form a committee to choose candidates for the head coaching vacancy that will then get the final selection done by a university president, not the athletic director?

I doubt he 'blames' Smatresk though.  I'm thinking Smatresk is going to be around longer than he will.  It would be suicide if he were to ever let slip that Smatresk was the guy who made the upcoming hire if it's not a good one.

This is such a spot on question its almost ridiculous we are asking this. And why do we have an AD at that point? Just get rid of him and have a committee or the president make decisions for the athletic department...

He won't do it publicly. He will just do it through back channels and rumors like he did Stephens.

Well, at least up until a couple of days ago when he blame a hiring committee...

The Universty President is going to make this hire, whats not to get?

Have you heard of Footballscoop?  Its the main website for head coaching jobs, they're usually pretty spot on.

Hauck never won a National Championship, he's 0-3 in the National Championship games.

That climbed way out of the bag once Bataille was gone.  Same rumor as hiring Dodge because she was not going to be the 2nd-highest-paid University employee...

You can bet this kind of rumor will stay hidden if things go south with this hire.  Smatresk will be here longer than Rick.

Except that isn't what he said. He said he was forced to take a hiring committee choice.

I have worked in multiple athletic departments and sports organizations, and multiple times have seen search committees multiple times for coaching and staff choices.  Even if there is a committee, the Athletic director or President or both will probably have to pick.

Talked with Zach and this is what he had to say

"It’s my belief the president will be very involved in the search and there won’t be a hire made without him signing off on it. He’ll see the opinions of the committee but they won’t make the hire. "

I think its pretty much the search committee presents the best option and the president has to okay it.

I don't see Smatresk going against the grain of the committee. Therefore, we need to know who is on the committee. But really, we don't. That is because regardless of the hire Rick Villarreal is our ATHLETIC DIRECTOR and full accountability lies at his feet.

To me, this feels like good news.  I realize this is "hearsay"  but...

Where there is smoke, there is..like..probably fire dude.

Somebody leaked this on purpose.  And I kinda believe it is true, and if it is true-   RV is just a facilities and public relations guy until the end of this contract, that won't be renewed.

It isn't a great situation but at least it means something is being done.

There is no guaranty that the "committee" will contact and/or evaluate any but a select group of coaches. Coaches selected for contact by whom? Smells like bureaucratic BS to me.

Probably the best way to approach this is to have a pro-athletic department individual to point out how the whole institution benefits from a high dollar hire. Show examples of peer institutions have benefited from the revenue generated by the athletic department due to increased visibility, merchandise sales, ticket sales, increased TV dollars, etc... Next, show how top tier academic institutions like Michigan, Ohio State, Cal, UCLA have all embraced an increase in spending for athletics, thus enabling them to commit more money to academics. Now, you throw the candidates we need to throw the money at- the TCU kids, Major Applewhite, etc. By pointing out to the committee (especially the eggheads and bean counters) that all will benefit with this hire, it will be easier to sell the higher buy in cost.

I'm right there with you. Hopefully, Smatresk is taking the bull by the horns and leaving RV holding the shit shovel. RV can then scoop poop for the remainder of his contract. Smatresk can get his guy in here to run the football program without having to buy out another contract. They would use a committee anyway, even with a new AD, right? Not an ideal way to do things but in essence still gets us from point A to point B without RV "leading" the way.
