DENTON -- Athletic director Rick Villarreal and school officials have taken some initial steps in their search for a coach to replace Dan McCarney, who was fired in the middle of his fifth season, including establishing some of the traits they are looking for in his replacement.

"We want someone who is going to be offensive-minded, can recruit and put us in position to be successful," Villarreal said.

RV also wants his water to contain just the right mix of hydrogen and oxygen.

Can we just have RV make a list of candidates so we know which coaches we shouldn't hire? Maybe that's what the committee can do, take Rick's list and use it as a guide of what not to do...

George Costanza would be proud

well judging by recent hires:

Coach needs to be on the way out at a P5 school

Be a new head coach with UNT background no Head Coach experience

Losing record at a mid P5, but managed to make some bowl games in between losing streaks

Carry a really nice resume folder

Have ties to RV via TCU or USM

Finally willing to kiss the rings of the 17

Well, at least you can't say he hasn't tried all the angles:

-Shocking high school coach, splashy hire:  check
-Experience head coach:  check
-Defensive minded coach:  check

High school coach got nowhere in the win-loss column. But, his last two signing classes were good.
Experience head coach/defensive-minded coach got us to one bowl game and won it.  But, quickly reverted back to the 1-2 win plateau of the high school coach.

So, that only leaves the combination not tried:  youngish assistant coach who is an offensive coordinator.

Other combinations not yet tried:
-NFL coach with no coordinator experience in college or pro
-Position coach who has never had been a coordinator anywhere
-Retired head coach who has been sitting it out a few years
-Special teams coach
-CFL coach...in the mid-1980s, Abilene Christian rolled with a former CFL head coach, John Payne.

thought the same thing when I read it.

There is one other thing that he hasn't tried.

Hire a successful coach away from another FBS team.

Willie Fritz 14-4 (11-0 in Sunbelt) in his second year.

151-66 as a head coach.

If we could actually get Fritz before another school higher up in the ranks, I think it would be one of the best hires RV could ever hope to make. Fritz also has TX HS ties on top of his proven winning record. However, RV will probably not even go after him the way he should and yet again miss a valuable opportunity.

Unfortunately, I might want to contact Miley Cyrus and explore that twerking thing with her but she probably wouldn't take this old man's call. It takes two to tango.
