Some Thoughts On Change

We need a new AD.  I know this is nothing new to this board, but we all need to be saying it.  I've liked RV.  We have turned a MAJOR corner in terms of facilities with him here.  It's impossible to say whether we would have achieved the same thing (or more?) with anyone else, but the facts show we've seen improvements.  He has made some extremely bad hires in the most visible of college sports, and has been unable to build any kind of momentum after those facilities were completed.

In any kind of organization you sometime need someone to take you from one level to another.  Their roles are suited for those short term jobs.  I see RV as someone who came in and saw a bad situation that could be made better.  He did get the University to allow Tailgating, and he helped institute some school pride with students, the crown jewel being the new stadium.  These are organizational and planning jobs.  The hiring of coaches hasn't gone as well. He was suited for taking us from an abysmal situation to a better situation but doesn't have either the skills or mindset to help the University take the next step.  We need a fresh set of eyes and enthusiasm to come in and make those next level changes.  This person will be optimistic with the resources available, and not still view the school/alumni through the same set of eyes that sees only apathy.  

 

RV is like that first car you buy when you get your first real job.  It's decent, it takes you to work and allows you to change your financial situation for the better as you change jobs for more money and a better life.  Eventually you look at the car and think "this doesn't represent where I currently am in life.  I can afford better, and if I want to keep improving my situation I need something that shows my success better".  That old car isn't bad it's just not the one to take you on to the next level.

RV can't help but see the negative and frustrations he's experienced with this University.  He knows the potential but can't communicate that in a different way than he has for the last several decades.  The people are tired of hearing the same old lines from the same old people.   Even if a new person comes on and says the same thing in a different way, it'll still be new and different.  It's time for change.

Rick should have left five years ago, and not given his many problems, but his position is one that needs new blood and energy every so often. If he had been above average he would have been stolen long ago. I think 10 years is good round number unless the an AD is utterly amazing.

I agree there must be change.  Let's take a look at the personnel side of things. Why did RV hire Mac in the first place his record as a HC was not winning.  Why did RV hire Shanice and Peterson?  Why did he hire Benson? Now lets take a look at the financial side, particularly the contracts. What does this say about his business acumen? You give a new contract for winning a bowl game but still have a losing record?  Now let's take a look at the facilities, he along with TD raised money to build the stadium. He was able to get tailgating started which gives a different experience for college day games for the students.

I do agree with MH the time has come for a new AD.  We need one with experience particularly in the ability to hire folks as head coaches who have shown they can recruit in Texas. The new AD needs to make the HC hire for football.  Since NT is a state school they must follow the rules to hire a state employee just like any other position. I do not know how long the job announcement must be posted but you can rest assure that by the time all the hoops are jumped through it will take time. 

Looking forward to seeing what the next chapter in NT Athletics will be in terms of getting the football program on a competitive level in D1.
