The only problem with the Oregonian, is that 99% of their sports coverage centers around the Ducks (UO), Beavers (OSU) and the Trailblazers (NBA).  Portland State hardly rates a mention other than a passing mention in the sports section.

Part of the problem was that in 1955, when Portland State University was still Portland State College, then UO president Owen Meredith Wilson, tried to stymie PSC development claiming that according to a 1929 ruling by the Oregon University System , "that no public university or college in Oregon could duplicate the programs offered by another, with grandfathered exclusions for the University of Oregon and Oregon State University," successfully convincing the state legislature to pass legislation to protect UO's enrollment and hinder PSC's.

In 1961 we began to offer graduate studies, 69 we were granted university status and in 72 offered doctorate programs.

Green, white, black accent colors? In a metropolitan area crowded by larger state schools and professional teams?  History of being stunted or jilted by those state universities and legislature!?

Good god; Mean Green family, we have found our wayward twin, separated at birth.

So, Oregon to you = SMU to some on here. Got it.

You make PSU and UNT sound like twins separated at birth!  Same colors and everything.

It was unintentional, I assure you, but it is really eerie to have two universities so far apart and so diverse, sharing s history. But PSU and all the Willamette Valley, including UO, OSU, Lewis & Clark, Reed College and every other university east of the Cascades are some of the most liberal institutions, whereas I would assume that UNT (being in Texas) is more of a conservative institution. When I went there, I felt like a square conservative peg trying to fit in a very round liberal hole.

I'd say no.   UNT and Denton, TX have deep roots around music and the arts, which I think results in a pretty liberal environment.

Another thing we share, Portland State also has a strong tradition in music and the arts.  One proposal that has been bouncing around is for PSU to merge with Oregon Health & Sciences University and Oregon Institute of Technology and change our name to "Oregon State and Polytechnic University" (shortened to Oregon Tech (like Virginia Tech)). and emphasize how we are a school with a strong history of the arts and looking to combine that with cutting edge technology.

Well, PSU has only been around since 1946, so we aren't exactly the twin separated from birth, but rather more like your long lost illegitimate little brother.

Again, the SMU comparison just gets better and better.

But seriously, it's been nice having you around this week. If you like watching masochist as a hobby, check back in from time to time. You will have a ball.
