Normandy.  Do they crawl on the beach, waiting to get picked off from intense fire, or do they get off the beach, re-group, charge and overtake the enemy, and start the beginning of a successful invasion?

"Improvise, Adapt, Overcome!" Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Highway (Clint Eastwood) - Heartbreak Ridge

We must have missed that memo.

you do realize, unless we're Team Xerxes or Team Santa Ana in this analogy...that 2 of the 3 battles you listed were losses caused in large part by the stubbornness, hubris and arrogance of leadership. even Bastogne was more or less a stalemate, though certainly important strategically and for troop morale...but unless you're saying that a tie against Portland State saturday is a significant accomplishment, I think this whole thing kinda blows up.

also...between all three battles, roughly 30,000 men lost their lives. kinda seems ridiculous now to compare that to a football game, huh?

My uncle was at Bastogne and if he were alive today, he would strongly disagree about it being a stalemate.

They dug in and refused to give up.  It bought time and allowed us to regroup.

All 3 battles were determined stands that turned around wars.

If we don't make a determined stand Saturday, this season is lost.

I bet he'd also be really confused if not angry that you were equating his service in WWII to a UNT vs. Portland State football game.

No, not at all. Knowing my uncle, he would have thought it was pretty cool to be remembered for making a gallant stand.

However, he would have been angry that someone would call it a stalemate.

They held Bastogne and the 7 major roads that went though it for 8 days until Patton's 3rd Army broke through.

Trust me, there wouldn't have been any confusion on his part.

Go USA, and go Mean Green.

Definitely ridiculous to compare it to a UNT home football game, that's for sure.

Because when have we ever seen 30,000 turn out, alive, dead, or both added together?

Maybe the Baylor game at old rusted Fouts Feild -  Sept 6 2003.

Attendance 29,437 .....If you add in players, coaches, ticket takers, security, etc, all together, it probably made it to 30,000 people who were there.

I remember 3 things.

Brandon Kennedy's 24 yard fumble return for a TD, Patrick Cobbs' 81 yard TD, and how utterly distraught the Baylor fans were.

We were walking out behind a Baylor group in the parking lot and they were totally dumbfounded after getting beat 52 -14.

Good times.

This was the high point of our return to FBS--probably still is. One of our best teams since Fry left, just annihilating an old SWC team in the Big XII, in front of the largest crowd ever, on a beautiful night.

Loved every second of that game. It keeps me warm, when I think about our program for the better part of the 25 years I've followed us.

Is 5 winning seasons out of 25 really that bad?//UNT leadership
